Question Ice diving in the United States?

I am in southern Ontario, Canada and have managed to ice dive at Gilboa quarry in Ohio once. Usually, I have to go north for decent ice diving conditions though. However… this is an El Niño year, and that usually means a warm winter for the Great Lakes. I am not expecting favourable ice diving...

Trip Report Scuba Scene Oct 16-23 2023

Should have added… Through multiple flights (international with Air Egypt and domestic with Air Egypt and Air Cairo), none of us had any issues with any of our dive lights or batteries. My Sola light did not receive any attention, nor did my 18650 batteries for another light and my housing.

Trip Report Scuba Scene Oct 16-23 2023

Since it is a new boat, I figured I would post a report of my recent trip. We booked the liveaboard a couple of years ago, before the old boat was lost to fire. I will touch on both the liveaboard, as well as the week of land touring that we did, since it was all booked through All Star...

Question Egypt Safety due ongoing War in the region

I just got back from a trip to Egypt that ran Oct 16 to 31. Some in our group arrived in Egypt Oct 1, before the events of Oct 7. Those who were in country early saw absolutely no difference in security levels after Oct 7. During our Liveaboard and during the land portion of our trip, at no...

    F A Meyer

Got to dive a special-to-me wreck on the weekend that I have wanted to get to for a long time. My great grandfather sailed on the freighter J Emory Owen as an oiler for the 1902 shipping season. He sailed for several years on several ships, but this is the only one with written documentation...

Photography - Going on a Liveaboard

I am going through Cairo enroute to Hurghada as well. The Kraken housing uses an 18650 battery, so may be an issue as well.

Photography - Going on a Liveaboard

Thanks. I was hoping that was all there was. No interchangeable lenses will be going. Just native telephoto abilities of the cameras themselves. Only extra lens may be a wide angle dome for the Kraken housing. Might leave that at home though.

Photography - Going on a Liveaboard

I am booked for the Scuba Scene Liveaboard in October. Or whatever boat they are using then… I know there is some “weirdness” in Egypt with photography and photography gear, although I understand it is getting better…. All of what I read is about land-based photography though. Are there issues...

    Question Most versatile Caribbean destination?

Another vote for Grenada... Decent diving. If you can get to Carriacou as well, even better! Volcanoes are dormant, but Grand Etang Lake and Lake Antoine are old caldera, and Mt St Catharine is volcanic in origin as well. The mountains have a great natural park system, jungle waterfalls to...

Portugese man of war everywhere(upper keys)

My mother spent a good chunk of time on her honeymoon in hospital after getting tangled up with a Portugese Man-o-War in Bermuda (1966). She felt it without knowing what it was, started thrashing, and it ended up completely wrapped around her abdomen. She spent about 3 days under sedation. My...

Question At what age can a kid start diving

My daughter did PADI's Bubblemaker at age 8. She had a blast with this! It was a quick and easy way for me to watch from poolside and see how she did. It also let her get a feel for whether it was a hobby that she really wanted to pursue. Between age 8 and 10, she did PADI's Seal Team...

Looking for nicest boat in the Red Sea - anyone have suggestions?

This is the (new) Scuba Scene. The boat is in the water, but is still being finished out. Most of the pictures there are design concepts that will hopefully stay close to true. Home - Scuba Scene Liveaboard I am booked on this boat in October. Can't wait! (As a reminder, the previous Scuba...

    Red Sea facts

We have a group going in October on what will be an almost brand new Scuba Scene, booked through All Star Liveaboards. Pretty much left the extra tours in the hands of All Star Liveaboards... Week one will be diving the BDE route in the Red Sea. Once off the liveaboard, we fly from Hurghada to...

What is the appeal of Lake, Cold, Low vis diving?

I knew when I got certifies that I would be mainly a cold water diver. My family had a cottage on Lake Huron near Tobermory, and I knew I was going to be in shipwreck heaven! I do not think anyone ever forgets their first view of the bow of the Arabia emerging from the dark when they approach...

Suggestion Travel with non diving spouses

Our family has three types of travel, and my daughter makes out like a bandit with this system... a) Dive travel. My wife does not dive, so dive travel is for my daughter and I to go and dive, dive, dive. Cozumel, Bonaire, Florida, Bahamas, dive resorts, liveaboards, etc. Now that my...

    Diving off cruise ship?

7mm wetsuit. Water was about 55F as I recall. Considerably warmer than the 40-45F water I typically dive in Lake Huron at depth. We did two dives. There is a shop in Ketchikan, but their website says "CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS: No Dives Available Due To Limited Dock Times.". I connected with a...
