    Purchasing New BC

AquaLung Zuma, IMO best travel BC. I visited every manufacturer at DEMA and checked them all. Zuma seems to have it all, and is robust enough for all around use. I purchased an AL Dimension and use it for both travel and teaching, also a good bet. That is unless you are stuck on ScubaPro.

    1st regulator to buy

Buy the best reg you can possibly afford first, so you will not have to buy another later as your diving career matures. The Oceanic CDX5 is a good solid reg. I have one and a FDX 10 as well. My choice woul be an AquaLung Core, best req on the market in the price range with best warranties and...

    Tipping on a boat checkout?

We often have Instructors with students conducting check out dives aboard our vessel. Most of these dives are coordinated and the instructors make students aware of the etiquette of boat diving. I include a section on diving etiquette during my OW course, this includes courtesy as well as...

    Bayronto Charter

Contact Steve at Florida West Scuba and Charters in Venice (941-486-1400). We offer custom charters, I think our Island Hopper is the kind of boat you are looking for based on your passenger/equipment requirements. Likely will have to work around our regularly scheduled charters, but may be doable.

    instructor insurance recomendations?

Thank goodness I’ve never had to file a claim, and hope never to have to. All my contacts with DAN have been positive, and I have no reason to believe it would be otherwise. Guess you will have to go with your gut to make your choice.

Comparable to Aqua Lung Legend LX?

I agree with njmorrell, but I would use the dust caps. Oceanic FDX10 is also a great reg.

AquaLung Express full foot. These are my work fins and I too am a frog kicker. Wide fairly stiff blades and comfortable foot pockets. Nice color options if that is an interest.

Need instructor for checkout OW dives

Don’t agree with PNW divers or with the position that a confined water environment can be compared to an actual open water location. Skils are the same but conditions like wind driven waves, currents, surf entries, rocking boat and ladders, and less the idea viz/conditions are not. I’ve had a...

Need instructor for checkout OW dives

Maybe it just me, but I just don’t see how diving in any of the named springs could be considered open water dives. I have made dives in many of the springs and see them all as confined water environments. I know some instructors do this, I just don’t get it. echopkb, it might serve you better...

So what's the word on the $195 Aqua Lung i-100 ?

Hay guys, we are talking about basic recreational computer (i200/i300). Any of these would be adequate for the entry level Diver. If your concerned about algorithms or conservatism these are not for you. I work with over 3000 divers a year on our charter boat, the two computers subject and...

So what's the word on the $195 Aqua Lung i-100 ?

AquaLung owns Pelagic Systems, so all other brands are manufactured by AquaLung. The shop I’m affiliated with is an AL shop, so I’ve had the opportunity to own/use/dive most of their computers. If I wanted an all around computer I would go with the i300C despite the additional $100. A little...

Spring Diving in Florida, Blue Grotto vs Devil's Den?

Devils Den is one of a kind, and a lot of fun. I’ve taken new divers there when we could not dive in the Gulf due to weather. Also, if you dive the site along the outside edges you can get a feel of what cavern diving is like. Epcot costs $150 each.

Rinsing and storing gear on cruise ships

I take my gear on cruises all the time. I take my gear up to the pool and use large open air pool showers to rinse my gear. No one minds and often my activity results in interesting conversation. Depending on time of day I either find an out of the way spot on deck to lay gear out or dry on...

Tips needed for pinch flat avoidance

Aqua-Andy has it right. After my first and only flat pinch on my DSS wing I always made sure that I always kept it and my other wings inflated at least 25%. Never a problem since.

Best bang-for-the-buck in basic wetsuits ? (3-5mm, shorty and full)

AquaLung makes a line of suits they call “High Value” while primarily intended for rental use these suits are full feature. While I have high end AquaLung and Henderson suits I wear these High Value suits as my work suits. Really like my 5/3, and find the full 7mm to be one of the warmest suits...

65+ Grumpy Old Divers (or NOT Grumpy)

I’ll be 70 in May, and my first dive on compressed air was in 1958. I’m an active dive instructor and work as DM a on a dive charter 200 days a year. What makes me grumpy is that you “old grumpy divers” will never buy any new gear. You all insist on continuing to use the same gear you bought in...
