    Getting around in Rincon, PR?

When most folks come to Rincon they rent a car. It will get you to and from the airport and it will get you to the many restaurants in the area. There is one cab that you can call if he is available and answers his phone. Honestly, close to the dive shop... within easy walking distance I...

I have not been in the water for a while... to long and so several days ago went out for a snorkel... a very shallow reef about 10 feet. I took along my oly sp-350, no strobe and for fun took this image. It is clearly a small sea fan probably 4 feet down. I converted to b/w. Thanks for looking.

    PR in July: need advice

Please consider the more remote and less spoiled west coast of Puerto Rico. In the south, at Copamarine, Sea Ventures runs a nice trip out to the wall and for you the resort offers a wonderful beach for your partner. Also consider the northwest especially the Rincon area. Great beaches...

Drive from San Juan to Parguera, PR?

Yes... do give yourself the 2.5 hours. Torontonian has the directions down. As an alternative... you might think of Copamarina in Guanica. They are closer and do dive the wall... just a more easterly part of it. The wall dive is worth the very early morning.

    Certification Dives

HI, Just a quick caution. I hope you dont put pressure on your daughter to finish the cert dives on your trip schedule... rather than her learning schedule. I have found that coming from afar by air is quite stressful, dehydration and the chance of congestion may make for very difficult...

Trip Report: West Divers, La Parguera, Puerto Rico

The Parguera wall is one of the must dives in Puerto Rico. Victor is very safety minded and runs a great program. He is also a photographer as well. One night be sure to do the biolumencent bay. Remember also when you plan your next trip that Desecheo Island off of the West Coast... accessed...

    Olympus 350 - images & impressions

Hi all, I just have to jump in here and give a shout out to my sp350. Great camera... relitively inexpensive... shoots raw... as manual as you want to be. The preset modes are useful. I have shot with the Inon WA, as well as stacked close up lenses. I have also used a Wratten 22 filter and...

Tourist dies in New Caledonia during a "Discovery Scuba" dive

I think the varied perspectives of the DSD comes from the wide of range of practices which are within standards. These range from: ...full morning sessions complete with video presentation, gear orientation and an extended practice session in the pool... followed by a shallow water (20 feet)...

    Mixing PADI/SDI certification advice

No problem with mixing certs. I have certs from PADI and SSI including the SSI Divecon rating and the PADI Instructor MSDT and SDI Instructor. BTW PADI now no longer requires dives for the Nitrox cert.

Alternatives to La Parguera Divers in Puerto Rico?

Hi, I'll second the recomendation for West Divers. Victor is a great dive leader and the operation is first rate. Oceans Unlimited has been out of business for at least two years. The best ticket out to desecheo Island is Taino Divers in Rincon. (truth in posting) From time to time I run the...

    Near miss at 90 foot.

Otter, No doubt that the FFM has a utility but for the OP, a new diver, I cant imagine the problem he was trying to solve. He had a piece of gear that he did not know how to use and for what reasionable purpose? The gear was part of the problem that could have ended very badly. Its a bit like...

    Redesigning AOW

TS&M, I've gone around this many times and for sure the AOW can be strengthened. Indeed, the structure you outline can be done now by any Instructor that wants to. The question in my mind is why isn’t it done regularly? I have to say I have been shaped by GUE. The real strength of what...

    Near miss at 90 foot.

This is a great cautionary thread and thanks to the OP for opening up on this dive. Two thoughts come to mind. The OP did two "deep" training dives 5 months prior to this dive and yet found himself unable to manage a 90 foot dive. While the "deep" dives may have narrowly been within depth...

To dive or not to dive?

As an Instructor if I had any doubts about the ability of all of the students to safely exicute the dive I would not have let it go forward. Unless your instructor knew you guys would thumb it I'm surprised he put it to you to decide. If anything had gone wrong it would have been the...
