    Not a dive question really...

Just curious why O'ahu has a much higher population density than any of the other Hawaiian Islands?

Yesterday I saw one of the coolest things I ever done seen...

I wish I had a picture or some video footage, but I don't. It was a baby bat ray...and I mean BABY. From wingtip to wingtip this little guy was about 6 inches. I saw it in the sand and hovered over it for a few seconds just sorta mesmerized by what a perfect miniature "replica" it was...I...

Could scuba diving be bad for people with high blood-pressure?

Specifically what I mean is this: it is definitely the case that you are able to absorb stuff through your skin, and sea-water contains a tremendous amount of salt...so is it possible for a diver with high blood-pressure to absorb enough salt through his/her skin to cause hypertension issues...

    Do you have Morton's Toe?

For those of you who don't know, Morton's Toe is when your second toe is longer than your big toe. This doesn't really have anything to do with SCUBA, I'm just curious (well, I guess technically it could present problems with boots and fins).

    Cave diving depth question.

I'm not a cave diver, but this is something I'm curious about and I figured people here would know. How does depth work (as far as gas management, decompression limits, etc. are concerned)? What I mean is this: Let's say you enter, for example, a passageway near the surface that is, 10ft...

    Catalina Flyer question.

I have a Stanley tub (not the gigantic one, the smaller 25 gallon one) that I put all my gear in/tanks on. Never had an issue with it on the Catalina Express, but I've never been on the Flyer. Just wondering if anyone has brought one of these (or something similar) onto the Flyer? Just...

    bp/w VS. Dive Rite Transpac

At some point in the hopefully not-too-distant future, I would like to upgrade my poodle jacket to something more streamlined with back-inflation. Obviously a lot of people on this site like bp/w's, but I've also heard complaints about the backplates being uncomfortable. The Transpac seems...

    Hollis F1's=awesome!

Here's a review I wrote on amazon.com (bought them from an LDS though)... First I'd like to clear up a misconception about these fins; that they are tech-fins. Now don't get me wrong, these ARE tech fins in the sense that if you are a technical diver these would be excellent fins to purchase...

Well, I guess no one has dived Cress st. What about Little Corona (Robert Badham)?

Curious how this site compares to Laguna sites...lots of fish? Kelp? Anything unique to this site?

Anyone dived (dove?) Cress St. in Laguna?

I have heard good things about it, but still haven't dived it. Looking for a good description of what the site is like as well as what to watch out for and what direction to head out. A video would be great if you have one. A couple of weeks ago I was in Laguna and went to Cress St. just to...

Dive gear you own that you consider perfect

I own all my own gear but I only have a few items that I consider perfect (by "perfect" I mean that, should these items be lost/stolen/broken/worn out, they will be replaced with the same item). Hopefully I'll get to the point where all my gear fits into this category, but for now the only...

    Crotch-straps not on all BC's=RIDICULOUS!

So after dealing with a rising/shifting BC for quite a while, it finally dawned on me that I could probably just add a crotch strap. I went to an LDS (Wiley's Scuba Locker) and bought one for about $10. PROBLEM SOLVED! I can't believe 2 things: 1) that I dealt with the rising/shifting BC for...

How do you lure an octopus out of a crevice?

Octopi are, to me, the coolest thing in Socal waters...but I rarely get to see one. Last time I was at Crescent Bay I saw a fairly large one in a crevice. I thought about reaching in there to pull it out, but I didn't want to injure it or get my finger bit off by it's octo-beak so I just let...

    Great diving in Laguna today

May hold up fairly well for tomorrow, but definitely done by Wednesday. 1-2ft surf all day, light surge, the lowest tide I've ever seen, and 20ft vis. Not to mention tons of fish, several sea lions (including mom, dad and baby) and an octopus. Tomorrow should still be pretty good, but it's...

    Spring adjustment, F1 question

Is there anything bad about adjusting just one side of the spring? For the boots I currently have, the loose setting is bit too loose, and the tight setting is a bit too tight; but with one side tight, one side loose (on the same spring) it feels just right. So again, is this okay to do?

    Stiffer fins EASIER on joints?!?

Alright, so this is totally counterintuitive, but I can’t doubt my own experience. When I first got certified I bought the Mares Raptor split fins. I hated them but since they were the first pair of fins I had ever owned, I thought that I just hated fins period as opposed to hating split...

    lackluster diving in Laguna

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone is thinking about diving this weekend. Although the weather was great and the water was fairly warm for this time of year (surface felt close to 60F, at depth temp as 57F), the surge was moderate to strong, surf wasn't too bad early in the day (2-3 ft)...

    Finally great diving!

Last couple of dives have sucked but yesterday was great! 58F water, 80F air, 1 ft surf, light surge, 15-20ft vis and tons of fish! And to top it all off, a beautiful sunset!

What's the argument AGAINST wearing your mask under your hood?

I'm kinda embarassed to admit this (because it's totally stupid) but for a while I didn't wear my mask under my hood because I thought: "Man, it's hard enough putting my hood on, I can't imagine trying to put it on OVER the mask" (ugh...so stupid). So anyway, one day I had the earth-shattering...
