    Side Mount Regs

Yep, the rotating turrets make a huge difference. If you use first stages that have all the LP ports in say, a square pattern, like is good for a BM doubles setup, it will make the hose routing on sidemount irritating. Just MHO...

would you put a inexperienced diver on this dive

They are going to be freezing in a 5 mil at 51 degF! Just the shock of the cold alone + narcosis will get them in trouble. +n to all of the comments to discourage this dive. Keep trying...please...

To go to doubles or not.

+1 I went the tec route in January and decided to do it in sidemount (instructor also a sidemount instructor). When I made the decision to go tec, I first took a sidemount specialty class to get used to the gear configuration before Tec 1. Very easy transition from 1 to 2 tanks, at least...

How much weight do you dive with?

6"1", 208 lb...I went from 28 lb in OW cert with jacket BCD, 3mm and AL80 in fresh water, to 4-6 lb in same config. For me, the biggest thing I learned that helped me drop weight was to control my lung volume. Once I learned how to control my diaphragm and tighen up my abs, I would sink like a...

    First time to 70'

Blue Water is about 20 min from my house, and I dive there often. Were you headed to the school bus? That is the most popular place with an ascent line that goes to about 75'. I can remember the first time I dove ABWA 12 years ago or so in a 3mil and hit that thermocline. BRRRR! If this was...

    Which sidemount to get?

Somewhere a around 30-50 dives between the 3, including using 2 stages. I realize that I by no means am an expert, and have waaay less dives in SM as most others on this post, I only offer comment based on what I have done/seen. Maybe someone new to the config may find them useful, or not...

    Which sidemount to get?

Gotcha. I was only commenting on the "probably" in your post, and offering a "definitely" from my experience with those two systems you mentioned. It's all good! Have a great day!

    Which sidemount to get?

Interesting question. I didn't take it that far, but seeing as how the dive in question was to 106', might have been interesting if I showed up with a pony for safety on a deep dive. I think I might have argued that point a little further, and maybe I should have, given I'm the one that had to...

    Which sidemount to get?

Guess I should have clarified...they didn't want me using two tanks at the same time and they also weren't familiar with sidemount. I probably could have just sidemounted the one aluminum tank and would have been fine. Still don't see why using two tanks confused them. Best reason I got was...

    Which sidemount to get?

The SMS100 wing is designed to stay close to the body, sandwiched between backplate and your back like Transpac, and it does not taco in any config (from experience). Have also used the Recon and Nomad, and they don't taco either. Just my $0.02.

    Which sidemount to get?

FWIW...I just returned from a dive trip, and used my SMS100 in a single tank BM config (they wouldn't let me sidemount, ugh, resort operators :/). It has a 52lb lift wing with bungees, so I just bungeed it way down, added cam bands, 4lb of soft weight under the backpad (also had waist mounted DR...

Side Mounting Mods on my Zeagle Express Tech...

You should also check ou the new Hollis SMS100 and the Oxycheq Recon. Both are 360 degree wings and specifically made for sidemount. Can also be used with singles and doubles (Hollis for sure, not sure about the Oxycheq). Will be diving my SMS100 this week on vacation...can't wait! This was...

If you had $1500 to spend which light would you buy?

I have the new Hollis LED16W and it has been great so far (made by Light Monkey). Used on a night dive in a local quarry, viz not stellar, and it was awesome! Better than my UK C8, but really not the same class of light. I use 2 Intova 4.7W LED for backup, which are nice as well. Actually...

    First Dry Suit Dives

+1, love diving dry, even in warmer water. Nothing beats getting out of the suit and not having to towel off :D Now, just add some DIY drygloves and you'll be set! Happy diving!

    New gear purchase survey 2010

January began my adventure into tec diving, so my equipment cost to dive trip cost ratio just skyrocketted! Most of this I got to try first, as well as other brands, so I got something that was the most comfortable to me, and got some good deals. Haven't spent this much since I got certified...

    question about newbies

Had something like this happen on a USS Oriskany dive earlier this year. On dive 2, I was asked to "watch" a less experienced diver b/c the person buddied up with the diver from the dive shop was not going to do the second dive with the group. Since the diver was certified and had done the...
