How much do you earn as an instructor in NZ?

I've scored a working holiday in NZ -- I'm wondering approximately how much dive instructors make over there. I was earning an hourly rate of about 16-24 (depending on the company) in Australia -- plus commissions. What can I expect from a NZ job if I land one? Cheers for the help, Jen

Salem MA area looking for some dive info

I'll be in the area for the next few months. I'm looking to do some diving as well as a couple of courses... I want to find a dry suit course and an Instructor crossover course from SSI to PADI. Anyone have advice on where to go? I'll be needing a dive buddy as well (I've never been diving...

    How do you celebrate 100?

On the boat I work on/was trained on, we have a tradition where your 50th dive = topless and your 100th dive = naked. It's how we celebrate! A newly highered (experienced) instructor told me he'd never heard of such a thing (and here I was thinking it was SCUBA Bible-type ****)... So how do...

    TUSA Splendive or Neptune Opal?

I'm about to buy a semi-dry because I've been freezing. Those are the two that have been strongly suggested to me at my local dive shop. Any input?

    Best buddy check mnemonic device?

My OW instructor gave us this one: Bruce Willis Ruins All Films Personally... I like a lot of Bruce Willis films. So who can do better?

    Deep-shallow-deep profile affects off-gassing?

Thanks guys! I appreciate the discussion. I always hate when organizations give you rules and/or recommendations without reasoning. And it's good to know that there is no real evidence that surfacing mid-dive to get bearings or retrieve a confused/lost diver isn't going to kill me straight...

    "Piece of Paper Syndrome"

There definitely seems to be a running obsession with "the piece of paper." After 12 dives, I got a card that said I was an "Advanced" diver -- just because I paid a little more money, had a 30m "deep" dive with some hand-holding, got shoved off a tender, handed a compass, took a few pictures...

    Diving with a period

I always wear a tampon and just change it when I get out of the water. Since I mostly boat dive, there's usually a bathroom right there and ready. On a side note -- does anyone else notice bouyancy differences during their period? I had my period on the last dive trip I went on and I...

    Deep-shallow-deep profile affects off-gassing?

I am reading through my dive con manual and I found a point I need more clarification on. It says that you should only dive deep and then get progressively shallower throughout a dive -- and never return to deeper water because the residual nitrogen in your system affects your means of...

    Full foot or boot?

... "Considering the fact that your avatar seems to show you violating Federal and Hawaii State Law, don't bother changing your profile; it seems to accurately reflect your State of Mind." That pic wasn't taken in Hawaii -- and I'm also not actually making contact.

    Cairns internships for DM/DCon?

    Thanks for the advice.

    Full foot or boot?

Haha, I should probably update my profile. Here you are thinking I'm trying to buy a pair of full foot dive fins in New England... which I can see as being a little short-sighted. I can't even SURF without boots until what, July at home? I'm in Hawaii at the moment on my way back to Cairns...

    Full foot or boot?

Honolulu, HI -- and as far as I can tell from my experience here (and speaking with local divers) -- not only is the thermal thing not an issue, there aren't a lot of shore dives without sand.

    Full foot or boot?

Why all the hatred for the full foot? I went into a dive shop this morning and asked if they had any full foot fins and was told that "we only sell SCUBA" fins." Very snootily, may I add. Why all the hatred? Am I missing something? I've done some basic research and it appears that full foot...

    Cairns internships for DM/DCon?

Last trip I had to Cairns, I came across a program that seemed to claim it was a pure work-off program. In exchange for dives and dive con training, you slaved away on the boat for a period of time and only paid for snorkel gear. Ask for more info and find out that the program sure does include...

Where to dive when the surfs up?

I got stuck diving the inner reef at Hanauma Bay today -- and H Bay is where I was told to go when the water was acting up. Does anyone have any tips for a nice shore dive in this weather? I'm only going to be on the island for another couple of days. My skill level is pretty fresh (less than 50...

    Shark's Cove report 27Mar10

It wasn't just up on the North either. I checked the report when I went out this morning for my dive and didn't bother with the North Shore (although it's killing me that I haven't had a chance to dive Shark's Cove yet - just snorkel). We went to Hanauma Bay and the lifeguards wouldn't let us...

    Burlington Scuba Shop?

It works just like cash -- except only in that store. And since I'm moving in April, and I don't have 638.00 worth of stuff I need to buy in Burlington. (Heading back to Australia -- where I got cert'd to do a dive internship.)

    Burlington Scuba Shop?

Normally I'm all about supporting LDS (and I generally do) -- but to the tune of 200.00? That's a bit heavy.

    Burlington Scuba Shop?

Leisure Pro is going to give it to me for 475.00. It comes with a limited 24 month warranty.
