    rescue class in West Palm

I will be working in the Ft Lauderdale/West Palm area in May and wanted to take the Rescue Diver course while I'm there. Any recommendations?

    Key Largo vs. Key West

I used to spend a week in Key West racing sailboats every year. With 3,000 sailors in town it was a great place to go to bars at night and race all day. One year my wife and I stayed a few days after race week. The first day we did the lighthouse, Hemingway's house, a museum and Mel Fisher's...

How crowded are the Keys in the mini-season?

I booked a condo for July 21-28 in Islamorada for my family to dive. Then I heard that this is the week of the lobster mini-season and every dive boat will be packed all week. Do I need to change my dates?

Deep diving as a goal - the stigma.

With 25 dives and the deepest being 42 feet, it is natural to want to go deeper. Once you build your experience and comfort level to safely go as deep as any rec dive operator will take you, you may end up like me and say that's deep enough. I would rather spend a long time on a shallow dive...

    Cruise stop in Belize

We used Sea Sports Belize last year and were very pleased. Don't try to go to Ambergris Key for one day. Relax and dive in Belize City then go to San Pedro for a week next year.

rent or buy BC/reg for vacation diver?

As you have already noticed, rental gear will not kill you. I don't dive much more often than you but I decided to buy my gear. I shopped closeouts, demos, etc. and got great deals on decent gear, but it still doesn't make sense financially. The only way I can justify it is because I simply...

Neat Little Tricks Are Good to Know

Not only can I, but I always do. Either my gear or my body is slightly heavier on the right side. I always dive with 1 lb more in the left pocket. Believe it or not that 1 lb means the difference between a nice, even trim and constantly waving my right hand to stay level on a dive. I think...

    How young is too young?

Just to be sure - From what I can find the 40' depth applies to the younger kids, right? It looks like for 13-14 year-olds the regular OW rules apply but they have to dive with an adult. I have two daughters, 14 and 16 who are going to get lessons and gear for Christmas. The 14 y/o will be...

Flying with Dive Gear - Best Practices

One word of warning - don't put delicate gear in a rollaboard if you're going to be on a small plane. Those bags are going under the little plane anyway and there is less padding in the small bag than in your big one surrounded by wetsuits.

    Mask fit question

I am particular about trying on the exact mask that I'm going to buy. The other day, though, I stopped by my "local" dive shop and tried on masks I don't need just because I was there. I really liked the Sub-Gear Action mask which fit beautifully. Now I decided to buy the mask but my LDS is...
