Reason for RH release waist buckle?

The right hand release is 90% canister light related I'd imagine. Today, with better and better lights, that's perhaps less of a concern for most. Personally, I teach that harnesses should have right hand release on left side of the crotchstrap. That way, if a diver is upright and ditch both...

What do you do with your first deco hose?

I teach to move from deco stage to deco stage. It reduced the number of steps you have to do, and it teaches people to switch in the same way they will have to, if they start doing deep hypoxic tmx, where switches to backgas can be problematic. When properly learned, it looks really slick...

Help me understand the rule of fifths for IBCD

I don't think you sound like a jackass. You can't know my background and I take no offense at all, please don't worry. Now, I could wave good bye to my students after certification, remind them about Dunning Kruger and ask them to read their manuals, the bits about being patient and wary, and...

Help me understand the rule of fifths for IBCD

Hi all, thank you for an enlightening thread. In relation to planning a few short bounce technical dives to 100-105m on open circuit, I have read various approaches to avoid ICD, or rather to avoid it causing Inner ear DCS. I think I'm up to date on current material (The old “rule” of fifth...

    Seiko inside your divecomputer?

Hi All, I am writing an article about the history of divecomputers, and in doing research I came across an interesting post from back in 2008 on a forum for watchgeeks. Some Curious Information About Seiko Dive Computers... In any case, here's what the post say: ---- I was visiting one of...

    Nitrox: Narcosis myth?

Hi Steve. This has actually been done as part of an Israeli study. You can find it referenced in the DAN tech dive proceedings 2010, p. 77. You can download it here: Technical Diving Conference Proceedings.. It was indeed a double blind study, and the outcome was that there was no difference...

Any volunteer in Marine Conservation Philippines

Hi TripleAech, I saw this post and thought I should just say hi as a fellow scubaboardian. :) As I work at MCP, I obviously can't pretend to be unbiased, but as I saw your post I thought at least I should offer to answer any questions you may have! @NicolasDg Thanks very much for your kind words!

The "Completed EFR Primary and Secondary Care training" prerequisite for PADI Divemaster

It is optional to cover O2 administration in the EFR course(s). You do however have to learn about it on the Rescue course though as you already know. In other words, your AHA first Aid course is fine as a prerequisite for the DM training, even if it doesn't cover O2 admin.

    Concerns about moderating policies

I made it to page 9, then TL;DR I rightly or wrongly assumed the next six pages would be more of the same. However, I would like to say that I enjoy SB tremendously, largely due to the effective moderation that is run. Discussions can get heated from time to time, but when there is just too...

    Modern Ratio Deco usage?

In my first tec course with ISE (InnerSpace Explorers) a DIR-oriented, GUE offshoot I learned RD. I don't know which particular flavour of RD it was, as I understand from this thread that UTD and GUE do it differently. Perhaps a third flavour. The ratio based profiles I would do previously...

Article: Two Dive Science Podcasts from Pod Diver Radio

Interesting material. I'm delighted to see so many other cool podcasts I want to hear now. I've dropped the link here, to spread the word: Podcast: Thermal stress and decompression - Marine Conservation Philippines

    Advice for IDC in Asia

I second what divechick says. A long time ago I had the fortune to work with Rich Reardon in the Philippines, and I thought he was one of the funnies, calmest and nice instructors I've had the good grace to call a colleague. I do not know where he teachers IDCs - we've fallen out of touch, but I...

    Advantage of AOW

Hi Mike, Yes, you're perfectly correct - doing the Advanced Open Water Course is like a taster-plate. You get to do the first dive of a number of specialties, two of which are always deep and navigation. As an example, the Night Diver Specialty is a three dive course. At the discression of...

FINS, FINS, and more FINS!!! Help!

Keller, I've dived jets, and Hollis F1's and F2's. I've also dived a number of other fins, but they all pale in comparison with these three. I like the jets, but I prefer the Hollis fins - The heavy batfin for drysuit diving is just sublime - I find I get a better power transfer to the...

OW to DM (Utila/Roatan or Koh Tao)

Hi Shasta, Yeah - that was admittedly a bit cheeky =) What I should of course have said in this company of grizzled veterans was something like: "Please be aware many divers will recommend instructors based on friendship, not skills. Some divers have rotten friends. Please also be aware...

OW to DM (Utila/Roatan or Koh Tao)

Scubaalp, I think people in this thread are overly hard on the way you've chosen to go pro. In my opinion, doing a divemaster internship somewhere cheap also has some benefits. You'll meet tons of different divers and if you're smart and humble you'll learn some from the good ones. Doing as...

    Article: Air integrated dive computers

Thanks for reading and commenting. I would tend to agree with you Dr. Lector in that failures in either system are very, very rare. As such I’m willing to contend the discussion isn’t a terribly important one in diver safety - but I like talking gear. =) The early, thin miflex...
