Hey SoCal divers, I usually visit La Jolla or Catalina for shore diving, but would like to check out some of the Laguna Beach area dive sites on a future visit (driving out from AZ). Does anyone have any suggestions for accomodations with reasonable room-rates? diver-friendly? Any travel tips...

Hi Ed, Welcome to Scubaboard and AZScuba. There's a bunch of us AZ divers out at the local lakes pretty regularly. Conditions at Lake Pleasant have been pretty decent by desert standards lately... at least where I've been diving. One of these days we'll have to arrange a group...

I'm sure some of the CA divers will chime in with more details, but if you're in SD, La Jolla may be your best bet for shore diving. You should be pretty comfortable in a 7mm wetsuit. Catalina is also a nice destination, although depending on your schedule it may or may not be worth the trip...

Yep, we do indeed see fish out there (and pick up plenty of trash too)! I'm horrible with freshwater fish ID, but there are bunches if you're in the right place at the right time... Last time out, even saw a bunch of little fish babies hanging out in some grass - eyeballs with tails :D

I think the underlying idea throughout this thread is that we all need to take responsibility for ourselves. Not just our words or actions, but also the situations we allow ourselves to get into. Let others ruin your dive or don't, help others or don't, dive solo or don't, but please don't...

I wouldn't consider gear safe in the open either. When I was out there last month, my buddy and I witnessed a few passers-by digging in some gear bags left by the stairs on a friday night. We watched closely, but nothing was taken. We used the lockers. The following day we used lockers again...
