Best way to dive and experience Fiji?

RA divers at Volivoli I believe is the better way to go. When I was staying at Volivoli there were guests that came over from neighboring Wananavu because of a wedding that had taken over the resort. Volivoli has a serious dive operation focused on meeting the needs of the divers staying there...

    Surprise observation in Palau

I went to Palau last year and the dive sites are in the same condition as the first time I went 10 years ago. In fact not much has changed except for the influx of Chinese tourism and the businesses to accommodate. I did see some poor diving skills while at Blue Corner and there were more boats...

Best way to dive and experience Fiji?

Volivoli for land based diving without extra flights. Great diver-centric resort with access to the Bligh Waters, some of the best reefs in the world. NAI'A for liveaboard option. Go May through November... I went last month in April and caught two cyclones... not fun.

    Hotels in Palau

I Recently got back from Palau and stayed at Palau Central Hotel. The price is similar to West Plaza but much better accommodations. It is new though and currently under construction, so it can be noisy during the day. I was out diving/exploring everyday so this was never a problem. I've dived...

Raja Ampat and Ambon Trip Report

I am resurrecting this thread because I think the report is SPOT ON, and I wanted to thank the OP for the detailed report on almost the exact trip I am currently planning. R4 is great when the conditions are great. I liked the North and the Misool area, but when I went I had fantastic...

    Raja Ampat or Palau Liveaboard

You most likely will not get the dramatic blue/clear visibility in RA as you would in Palau. Both places are favorites of mine. I think RA has to be hit at the right time of year with an experienced crew to get the most out of it. Visibility can be poor at times. Palau has more sharks and just...

    The World Shootout

Yes, they do require the unaltered RAW file for finalists. I know this because one of my images was selected in 2012 as a finalist and I was required to send the RAW file on a thumbdrive in the mail!

    The World Shootout

In defense of the winning image of the macro category, Imperial Shrimp (not a crab) are WELL documented in symbiotic relationship with Nudibranchs. It is not common, and two on one nudibranch is even less common but to accuse the photographer of subject herding for this photo, especially with...

    D7100 housing and lighting ideas.

Mark, I realize that people buy the Zen dome for travel and for CFWA opportunities. I personally like the dome, BUT, like ALex mentions, the image corner sharpness on apertures larger than F11 is less than desirable. For this reason, I only use the dome when shooting sunballs at small...

    More lense info please

The minimum focus distance on the 50mm is 1.5 feet and at this distance it does not shoot 1:1. The only thing you could shoot with this lens are reef fish, maybe a small shark. But with a better min focus distance The 40mm is still abetter choice for this application. I really see no advantage...

    D7100 housing and lighting ideas.

This is a shot of two Gobies on a whip coral that I took with the Tokina 10-17+ Kenko Pro 300+ Zen Mini combo. Snooted via fiber optics, dome about an inch or two away from the gobies. And yes, the AF is very slow. This shot took about 20 minutes to compose and it is still cropped about 20%. As...

    D7100 housing and lighting ideas.

I don't really understand the fascination with putting the 1.4 Kenko TC on the Tokina, unless it is for very specific Macro/wide shots via the Zen Mini dome; ie large nudi + a sunball. For this application this setup performs reasonably well, but I think if this is kind of shot you are after...

Lion Air to increase air routes via new Manado hub

Based on my last trip, I was completely satisfied with Lion Air for a low cost airline. I was not, however, satisfied with the overweight baggage fee trap that Air Asia snared me in when I bought my ticket at the airport. Lion Air was much more accomodating, the flights were on time and...

    Flights to Wakatobi

Very helpful. Thanks Quero. I guess I should have explained that I won this trip in a photo competition but the flights aren't covered in the prize. I guess I will just have to fork over the money for the flight. Thanks all.

    Flights to Wakatobi

Hi, I'm trying to plan my trip to Wakatobi, but the charter flight that the resort offers is almost $700! I have heard that Express Air flies to Wangi Wangi via Jakarta/Makassar, but was told that a boat was needed upon arrival to transfer to Wakatobi resort. This boat transfer, according to a...

Trip Report: Raja Ampat on the WAOW Liveaboard

Of course it is totally a subjective experience. But some "objective facts" (I'm not sure I'd use this term, maybe reliable observations?) apply to Raja Ampat as well. The coral is off the charts! Especially in the Misool region. These are some of, if not THE best coral gardens in the world...
