    Minimalist single tank rig

I tried this in a pool recently (sans exposure protection) because I think that sounds fantastic for travel. It works, but with a full AL80 I still list if I entirely stop moving. That lessened as I drained the tank somewhat, and I expect I'd spin slightly in the opposite direction with an...

    Shark fishermen at Redondo?

That's what I suspected. However, they've supposedly been reported before, and they claimed to be doing research. Thought I'd ask here in case anyone knows more. Will take photos of the lines next time I see them.

    Shark fishermen at Redondo?

I was out diving Veteran's Park a week ago, and there was a group of ocean fishing lines set up on the beach. Didn't think anything of it until I got underwater and saw the size of the line and hooks they were using. My buddy later asked around about these guys, and heard they're fishing great...

New shop: Zen Diving Cooperative in Pasadena

ICYMI: there's a post on Malibu Scuba Repair's site as well, from Karim Hazma about taking over from Glynn and moving the business to Pasadena.

New shop: Zen Diving Cooperative in Pasadena

No, not yet, but they said it's in the works. There will be a way to order online at some future date, and events will show up on the site / social media.

New shop: Zen Diving Cooperative in Pasadena

I stopped by this morning and had a good chat with the people there. Writing this from memory so please excuse any omissions or mistakes. Shop facilities: modern, minimalist shop as is the style today, with most of the stock in the back so as not to clutter things up. I spotted jetfins (or...

mapping deadhenge: the way to Deadman Reef

Old thread, but still the best place for this I think. I was digging up information on Deadman's reef in preparation for diving it, and I think Deadhenge showed up in the 2008 NOS hydrographic survey of the area. See map below, a colored-relief and hillshaded plot of the northeast edge of...

    Beach Diving

I do single-tank sidemount fairly regularly off of SoCal beaches. Generally I walk in with the tank clipped, and I'll deploy/bungee/etc once past the surf. Would like to switch back to doubles but I don't relish trudging through sand with 60+ lbs on my shoulders - maybe I need some LP50s. I'd...

Advice: is my drysuit zipper dead?

Thanks for the suggestion. I did try it the other way round - fill it with air and spray with soapy water, but I couldn't do it inside out so I know that's not a rigorous test. If repairing with aquaseal, I'd apply it to cover the exposed area and to tamp down the peeling edges, right?

Advice: is my drysuit zipper dead?

I've a E.Space from 2011 that's got about 70 dives on it and has served me well until recently. I had the neck seal replaced about 20 dives ago and have started getting leaks, and while I suspect that may be me having cut the neck too large, I'm also concerned about wear on the zipper. It's the...

SoCal Dive Reports - Let us know about your dive!

Nice photos. Piling we were at looks like the first of your three, although think one of the top pieces is now broken and dangling. Didn't see any grasses, maybe wrong time of year?

SoCal Dive Reports - Let us know about your dive!

Old Redondo Pier #3, 2020/08/14 AM Low surf, max a foot or so. Water was high 60s at the surface and leveled out at 54 F down at 40--50 ft. Upside was that visibility was much better down there, probably 20 ft or so, maybe as much as 30 on the first dive. We managed to find one of the pillars...

SoCal Dive Reports - Let us know about your dive!

Thanks, good to know. We entered on the far west side where there is a small dirt path (easier than clambering over rocks), and then did a surface swim to out beyond the ruins and rocks. The area you highlight would have been in the surf zone this morning, as the high tide was fairly low.

White Point, San Pedro, via sandy beach directly west of the bath house ruins 2020/07/02, AM Surf: 1 ft in the cove, no problem. Some surge at 20 ft depth. Water temperature: 62 F Visibility: < 5 ft most of the time. Hit a clear patch at 6 ft during our final ascent on the far end of the kelp...

SoCal Dive Reports - Let us know about your dive!

Deer Creek Beach, Ventura 2020/06/19, AM Surf: 2-3 ft waves, a bit rough walking in and out, with heavy surge in the shallows. Water temperature: 62 F Visibility: Mixed to lousy. Pea soup near the bottom and towards the east, but sometimes opening up to 10-15 ft further out and to the west. We...

    Flex80 Experiences

Has anyone here tried Santi's Flex80 undersuit? I've had a BZ200 for years, which was ideal for the cold Northern European waters but is a bit too warm for the warmer Southern California waters I now find myself in. The Flex80 sounds like it might be more suitable, but I'm not finding any user...

Shore dive buddies in LA area?

Seems like the consensus is to head to regular gatherings - sounds good, now that I have a list of some active ones. Thanks everyone!
