    New underwater photographer...real new

Personally, I would consider those to be fairly mutually exclusive terms. The only advice I can offer in the face of that point of view is to read everything you can get your hands on about U/W Photography. Now... if only I could be the best instructor without having to get training. Hmmm...

    Reasons for quiting?

I would say the number one reason is that they aren't having as much fun as they thought they would. There's a whole host of possible reasons for this... they aren't all that comfortable in the water in the first place, the water in their local area is 50 degrees with five feet of vis and...

    Which side for safe 2nd?

It is for exactly these reasons that I teach my students to donate their primary and to use the secondary for themselves. First, the OOA diver will very likely grab your primary long before you see his OOA signal if he/she even gives one. Second, the location and operation of secondary air...

Open Water Courses and the Swim Test

Well... and pardon me for butting in... speaking strictly for myself, I would be hard pressed to define someone who can float for ten minutes and snorkel 300 yards a "non-swimmer" -- I can't help but wonder if we're splitting hairs or perhaps even demanding too much. The ability to be...

    Why do we Dive????

I'm having a hard time thinking of a part of diving I don't love. Maybe the equipment cleanup gets to be a drag, but even then it's a time to socialize. I love the serenity of it. As someone else pointed out... there's not chatter. The world is tranquil. No one nagging, no one complaining, no...

Pardon me... I just have to vent...

No... I'm not that thin skinned. It's just the process of trying to keep up with the board and reading thread after thread of whining about how instructors suck at teaching skills, the LDS sucks, online shops suck, DIR sucks, non-DIR sucks... etc. etc. etc. ~lol~ It's kinda like when someone...

How do I control my bouyancy and trim?

Here's another thought... Swap the position of the fives and the fours and replace the fours with threes. Then add your two trim pockets with one pound each. This would allow you to shift weight forward and upward toward the head (to offset the feet sinking) without adding more net weight.

How do I control my bouyancy and trim?

The tendency to turtle is the reult of more weight behind you than in front. Shifting the fives forward (or swapping them with the 4s if they're in front) would make a least a one or two pound shift in weight more toward the front which, in turn, should allow you to add a tad of weight in the...

Pardon me... I just have to vent...

Yeah... if we could all just learn to play nice and share the sandbox without kicking sand in each others eyes ~grin~

How do I control my bouyancy and trim?

Remember there's more than one way to skin a cat... you can add weight up towards the head, or add buoyancy back towards the feet. What thinkness boots are you diving? Maybe thicker boots will give just enough added buoyancy? Are you diving weight integrated or a weight belt or both? Make...

Pardon me... I just have to vent...

It's a personal observation I just had to get off my chest and say out loud... The level of cynicism about, and contempt for, various agencies, instructors, diving styles, gear configurations and business practices on this board is astounding. It’s a serious turn-off. It’s a shame...

    Now THAT'S bouyancy control!

OMG -- I was just joking around because I figured it was some sort of training exercise (what to do if you lost a fin / broke a strap) That's just scary.

    Cognative Mapping

I almost exclusively dive natural navigation. It's probably because the first hundred or so dives I did were all wreck dives and I developed a distrust of the compass as a result.. it's a personal character flaw ~smile~ I rely heavily on the sand. The ripples set up in the bottom by surge...

Scuba-wise, Isabel takes a turn for the better.

Let's not forget that some of the best wreck diving in the country is off the coast of Virginia and North Carolina, too. That's the "graveyward of the atlantic" out there. Looks like Isabel is drawing a bead right dead on top of it...

    Mounting Knife to BCD help

I have my backup knife attached to the pocket flap on my BCD, too. My knife had a backplate that fit on the inside of the flap, so no grommets for me... it's actually attached with braass screws to to the frame of the knife. If your knife can not be screwed down as such, then yes, use grommets...

    LDS owners, rejoice

Jim -- I just bought new Suunto computers for my Son and I both a few months ago -- I bought at the LDS and both did have warranty cards. Just a heads up so you know.
