    A very cautionary tale

Thanks for sharing this TSandM! From someone who has no training (or interest) in cave diving, stories like this really make you stop and think about the dangers of diving beyond your certification and training. Hopefully people will realize the dangers inherent in such a specialized form of...

    Returning found gear

+1 I would also contact my LDS and ask if anyone had mentioned losing equipment. I wouldn't feel right keeping something I found if I didn't at least attempt to find the original owner.

    City Water and Funky Gear

Like rhwestfall said, it's a matter of getting the gear dried out as fast as possible. My boots used to get pretty nasty by the end of summer, even with a rinse after every dive. This year I started using a Field & Stream Boot Dryer after every dive and I have to say, it's worked wonders. My...

    How Many Dives in 2011?

How many sessions did you take to pass OW certification

I don't remember the exact amount of class time, but we did 2 classes per week for 5 weeks. Each class consisted of approximately 1 hour of class time and 1 1/2 to 2 hrs pool time. We had about 15 minutes of free pool time each class to practice skills learned during previous pool sessions...

How do you say No to diving?

There comes a time in everyone's life when you have to decide what is most important. In your case, you must decide between diving and studying. Diving will give you two days of fun while studying for (and subsequently passing) your LSAT exam will directly impact the course of your life. I...

Are you wearing snorkel while SCUBA diving?

I stopped wearing mine last year for most dives. I figure for most of the diving I do it's not needed. If I plan a dive where a snorkel is needed, I'll take it with me and deploy it when needed.

    Rinsing

I dive exclusively "fresh" water and I rinse everything after I get home. There are too many pollutants and whatnot that find their way into the rivers, lakes, and streams, not to mention all the particulate floating around. Plus the wetsuit sure would STINK if it didn't get rinsed after every...

How soon do you refill your air tanks?

I like to have my tanks (and gear) ready at all times so I get them filled as soon as possible after the dive. The last thing I want is to get a call on Sunday from a buddy that wants to dive, but I can't because I didn't get my tanks filled and the lds is closed.

    Do You Like Sea Lions?

Great video! That would be so cool to drive a scooter around with sea lions! I need a scooter...and a drysuit...and a lot more money...

What's your next scuba gear purchase?

My next purchase will most likely be a camera. Then a drysuit. I'm getting to old to dive wet in the winter months.

How long is your Surface Interval?

Now that I'm back to diving, after my longest surface interval of six years, my longest surface interval now generally lasts from February to the Middle of April. I'm too busy at work then to dive and it's just too cold to dive wet. But I'd willing to recompress if I could find someone willing...

:) Fun question : How deep have you gone on single tank ? What's your record ?

85 ft on an AL80 in a dark cold quarry. As a general rule of thumb I don't dive deeper than the size of my tank. I think this was something a more experienced diver once told me and it just stuck. Can't remember the reason behind it though.

POLL, Nitrox tank use and analyze

On the few occasions where I've actually used nitrox, I didn't personally analyze the mix, but I did observe the fills, the calibration of the analyzer and the analysis of the tanks performed by the LDS. Since I watched the entire process from start to finish, I didn't feel it necessary to...

Teaching family. Good or bad idea?

I think you've gotten some good advice thus far so I'll only add this; If there is any doubt in your mind that you will not be able to maintain your professional integrity and objectivity throughout your brother's training then hire an instructor who can.

Do you carry basic safety equipment on dives? If not, why?

I answered no, although I do carry a whistle, shears, and knife on all dives. All my diving has been limited to rivers, lakes, and quarries where I just don't see the need for carrying the other items. If I ever get the opportunity to dive in the ocean either from shore or a boat, I will...

Think back a little...what were you like as a new diver??

I guess thinking back to the years following my certification, I think it's safe to say that I thought I was better then than I actually was and thought I knew more than I actually did. It wasn't until last year when I returned to the sport after a lengthy absence that I slowly began to...

What's your best dive ever ?

My best dive to date occurred just last Wednesday. I took my 14 year-old daughter on her first post-certification dive. Nothing fancy about the location (just a local creek), but being able to share the experience with her made the dive one that I will always remember.
