    How dangerous is diving?

Diving is dangerous. We mitigate by training and diving within the limits of that training. Any answer that says it is not "dangerous" seems to me to be a little odd.

Opinions on the value of taking the course so you can use Nitrox?

Didn't read every post, so may have missed something, but at 13 dives I doubt your air consumption is low enough to worry about needing enriched air to prolong your bottom time. That said, I've known some new divers that I've had to question whether they actually took a breath! Basically, if...

    Diving with full facemask

I did a PADI distinctive in full face mask with Mermaids in Thailand. It's not for everyone, and can be a little uncomfortable (large volume of air on head means your neck muscles can start to ache after a while). That said, I enjoyed it, but definitely recommend some training of some sort as...

How long does YOUR tank last?

Don't worry about it! As long as you stay within the limits of your experience, capability, boat rules etc. All that matters is you get back to the surface in a safe manner. Just enjoy your diving and your breathing will get better. (My first AOW wreck dive was to the Hardeep wreck in Thailand...

What was the right thing to do in this situation??

Good job on staying safe. Would have definitely been sensible though to ask for a bearing to the reef before jumping in. :-)

    OWC in November in Thailand?

Pretty sure rainy season ends in Thailand by around the end of October. From Nov to say May are probably the best months.... This year seems to have been particularly bad of course, but I know last year I was diving with some excellent weather from mid October right through till June this year.

    Using Surface Marker Buoys

Every dive. Learn to use it too. I've seen some hilarious attempts where people are all over the place. Some sinking, others taking a fast route to the surface and others tangled. So yeah, make it a drill to practice.

Which PADI specialties are useful and which ones are "underwater basket weaving"?

I've done a reasonable amount of specialty courses. Deep, Wreck, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Search and Recovery, Underwater Navigator, Rescue, Full Face Mask, Enriched Air etc, and have found them all useful. Wreck, I think is a must if you intend to penetrate, and a good Rescue course will...

Solo Free Diver Dies - Maili, Ohau Island Hawaii

Tragic. Whatever caused this incident, I sincerely hope could not have been prevented if this guy were not solo diving.

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

All we can do is hope. Many of the incidents in this particular forum are incredibly tragic and my condolences go to anyone who is involved or attached to anybody affected by them. However, it was reading these forums that actually ignited my interest in diving. I was drawn to the challenges...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

Not really. We go down a line in say a dropping 30 or 40 current, to maybe 25-30m, have 25 fin kicks or so to the wreck and then can either go into the wreck out of the current or fight the current one way and drift the other. I prefer to be inside out of the current. Of course, I would only...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

Simple fact is, we are, for the most part trained to dive as buddy pairs. As soon as we go in the water without our buddy we are kissing goodbye to an important and potentially life saving piece of equipment. A DM cannot be within reach of every person in his dive group all the time. Choose to...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

I totally understand what you mean, but I have led dives on wrecks where the best place to be is actually inside the wreck and out of the current. I don't know this particular site though so I guess my comment may have been incorrect. I guess what I was trying to say is that as qualified...

Missing Diver off of Kahala, Oahu, Hawaii

Just my two cents, but this is a wreck dive and as such all the divers would need to be qualified to that level. Any qualified diver should know that they do not dive beyond the extent of their training. Similarly I would assume the dive brief, provided it happened, explained that this was a...

    British woman drowns in Thailand

I was on a boat and spotted a body, obviously dead, at sea in the Gulf of Thailand. Contacted the boat owners and was told under no circumstances to bring the body back to shore as that would leave us open to liability. We got in touch with, the coastguard gave our position and were told we...
