I'm guessing helmets are popular among scooter using cave divers for the reason I noted above.
I said I would not take a scooter at night, not that cave divers who are practicing should not. I just can't imagine I would see very much at night.
I have over 130 dives at Dutch and have been...
I am in the habit of taking the butt dump cap off my wing to allow it to dry out. On one dive, I descended and when I went butt up I lost buoyancy. Feeling back I remembered the pull dump cap was in my pocket. I finished the dive remembering to keep a shoulder higher than hips position in the...
Horizontal body position creates more drag when moving vertically, as in descending and ascending, so you have more time to react to undesired vertical movement. Even a 45 degree body position creates a lot more drag so use that drag to your advantage. Venting air from your BC can be done by...
Last year, I dove at Dutch in the cove where large metal pipes run from the surface to the bottom. I was swimming slowly just below the pipe. Suddenly, my head found the pipe support. Ouch!!! I could not see it just above my view. If I had been swimming fast I may have been almost knocked...
I use this to fill two pony bottles from a full HP117 (13 and 19 cu ft) after I've tested them underwater (haven't needed them for real). They never get a VIP or hydro so I save $20 per year for 2 VIPs. They are less than 5 years old so I don't know about needing a hydro at that time. I only...
Tank -11 + BP -7 + Reg -2 + Head -10 = 30
You need a 30 lb wing. 32 seems to be a common size, which will be enough for your 3mm but may not be enough with your 5mm. Extra lift will not hurt you at all. It is a safety margin with minimal extra drag. You could go smaller since your wetsuit...
I can't develop enough pressure with my lungs to open the OPV, at least not without feeling I may pop a few aveoli. My lungs have to last the rest of my life, so I am careful.
Don't you figure this using the buoyancy of the tank at the end of the dive (-2). Calculated this way won't you be unable to stay submerged at your safety stop. I say this because, I have picked up more than my share of rocks when I became floaty near the end of a dive.
If you expect to be...
I bought from them over the past three years and all purchases have been great. I returned a few things and bought even more after. If you're diving you KNOW there is always more equipment to buy so store credit is fine with me.
After trying other weighting methods, I always go back to my DUI weight and trim harness. It can be adjusted to move the weight closer to your feet, eliminating your floaty feet.
This is an example of another reason to service your own regs.
An Apeks manual is freely available online, a big advantage over guessing. Before I serviced my Apeks reg, I read it. It stated the reg should freeflow when purged with the boost lever set to full and the adjustment knob turned to...
I bought a used Black Diamond several years ago. I didn't realize it was a small but the price was too good so I bought it anyway. You can expand it quite a bit with the size adjustments. I even expanded it more with cord so it fits with my drysuit. It has 4 large, rugged SS d-rings to hang...
The file is "read only" so must be saved to your computer in order to edit the values. I just downloaded the Jan 2011 and Feb 2011 links and they opened fine. I was able to edit them. Could this be your problem?
It sounds like what saved the diver was being so close to the entrance. If he had been farther back I imagine it would have been a recovery.
Do cave divers use a compass when there are no lines?
Hi Grumpy,
As luck would have it, I was diving yesterday with independent AL80 doubles and had a slight FUBAR. I put my bungee necklace on and then my hood. My drysuit neck seal continually bled air through the back. I found out later the bungee was under the seal. I guess bungees can kill...
I use a DUI weight harness. I tried weight pockets on my BP/W but it was very heavy to don loaded with 20lbs lead + BP + tank. It is easier for me to put on a preloaded weight harness then my BP/W. Also, I started thinking about being able to remove it underwater. With all the weight on the...
Can I assume you are diving sidemount this way? If backmount, the tank valve should stick up a quite a bit higher than the shoulder dump. I agree with you, the shoulder dump does stick up quite a bit.
Great idea on flipping the wing. Very innovative.
One of the things I liked about the Zeagle wings was the way the bungees are not run on the exterior. They face the plate and can not get caught on anything. The bungees you added can get caught if waved around near some jagged metal. I doubt they are necessary but they shouldn't cause...
