For those that are wondering what I'm doing fooling around in rivers.
I sold this footage to Nat Geo TV's program 'Monster Fish'. Should be out this year.
HC,
Sometimes we use fins, sometimes not.
If a stream is shallow or a series of small pools we walk from pool to pool wearing surf booties or wading boots.
If the water is deep, swift or we are swimming a long section we wear fins. Rather than the endless kicking of your usual snorkeling trip...
HC, looks like you have some good rivers out there. My advice is to start small and avoid rapids until you get the hang of whats going on.
Remember to scout the runs you want to swim for hazards ahead of time. When swimming constantly look ahead, both above and below the water for...
I have stumbled onto a field of old antique bottles as well as some relics. It's been great fun finding this discarded trash from long ago. Great thread!
Hey all,
I just finished up a couple swims in the mountains, great times!
Clear water, cool bedrock and boulders and a couple big fish.
My first time playing with a gopro camera, very nice little camera.
Here's to a good holiday weekend...
I know that to many this whole river snorkeling thing is a little strange but I'm having a great time exploring these crazy rivers and creeks in my area. I travel to the tropics and it's a great time, but the other 50 weeks a year are without tropical water and palm trees so snorkeling the local...
Thanks gang.
Scubajo007, We do swim for distance. In this case we swam right around 5 miles. We dropped a vehicle off at the take out and drove another to the put in. Blue sparkle, Skulking is a lot like boating, your ferry angles are still important!
I wear fins sometimes but my swim buddy does not. Fins are nice for extended swims, but can get in the way when getting in and out of the water often.
Skulking, our term for swimming/climbing/crawling upstream against the current can be easier without fins. It comes down to personal choice.
The huge snowpack in Washington state has swolen the local rivers to record levels.
Our search for clear water took us far up into the mountains to the little Wenatchee river. This river has extremely dangerous sections of class V whitewater but the 5 mile strech we swam on the 4th of July...
In prepration for an upcoming trip to Roatan and Utila I've been dusting off the snorkel gear in the local river. Cool temps and snow were a bit daunting at first, but a thermos of hot water to pour down the wetsuit take the edge off makes things a bit more palatable.
Not off topic at all, it's great to hear about your adventures.
Rivers can be a lot of fun, post up some photos or a trip report about your local rivers our creeks. There is a whole world of exploring under the waters of even the most humble stream.
I bought Dutton's book and found it to be eloquent and very interesting, opening my eyes to a whole new side of swimming.
The local crew is planning some distance swims of rivers our area this summer.
Using the current to our advantage we estimate traveling up to 20 miles a day, current and...
After screwing up way to many photos and video because of WB issues I just bring along a small white piece of plastic to calibrate my white balance. Light changes all the time and this quick and dirty method seems to work. Just get the camera ready, dive to your desired depth and auto WB off...
January in Washington means treasure hunting, as long as you dodge the floating ice. :D
Great fun, the ring is worthless but it was fun freezing my flippers off collecting this booty from about 7 feet of water.
I figure this will buy lunch in Roatan this March.
