I like to tell people that Utila is "a tale of two islands":- 1/ Utila Town - tons of dive shops, bars and restaurants. Lively nightlife. Not terribly attractive, noisy and busy. Lots of inexpensive places to stay. Only two small beaches. My favorite hotels, The Lighthouse and Manurii Boutique...

Turneffe Turneffe Island Resort was the last place I stayed in Belize , it was very nice and it’s close to all the best dive sites in Southern Belize. It’s a world away from the tourist crowds on Ambergris Caye (where we used to live).

I would do it if you were guaranteed to be visiting sea mounts and Cayos but they stop at pretty mundane sites around Utila (one of them 50 yards from my house).

oops, yes I meant San Pedro. I lived there 30 years ago, think I would remember .. getting old.

If you want great diving I would skip Ambergris Caye, it's glory days are in the past, too many tourists and cruise shippers nowadays. Head south for great diving and lovely unspoiled places to stay - Turneffe Atoll, Glovers Reef, Lighthouse Reef etc.

Unfortunately you choose the worst two locations to experience the best of Belizean diving. Placencia is a long boat ride to a reef and San Pedro Sula is overrun with tourists and cruise shippers. Head to the southern atolls for the best diving and to experience unspoiled Belize as it used to be...

I think its washing away every time there's a storm from the west / northwest, then they dump more sand on the beach until the next one.

West Bay yesterday, Utila ferry was cancelled as well.

I would pick one spot and stick to it, if you only have a week you'll waste so much valuable diving and relaxing time traveling from place to place, packing and unpacking. If you had 14-20 days it would be different. If you go to Utila, stay at Treasure Beach, it's beautiful and the snorkeling...

Primo time to dive is March - September

We received 15" of rain in 3 days last week on Utila and forecast is saying 5-6" more over the next 2-3 days.

I'm on the island of Utila, which is just a few miles from Roatan, I expect our conditions are the same. There is plenty of bleached coral, so expect to see lots of white but the majority of the hard coral is still ok and all of the soft coral is doing well.

Wow, and I thought I had been visiting the bay islands for a long time (25+ years), I'm still a newbie !!

Please consider doing this, my wife brought a dog back from her last trip. Someone met her at Miami airport and took possession of the dog, it was all very well organized.

Generally the viz gets better starting in late February and is better each subsequent month until October, same with water temperature.
