Malaysia - Diving, good or bad idea?

I'll be in Kuala Lampur 23-28 January and will have some time to dive. Any suggestions on where I should go on the Penninsula? Everything I've seen says that the diving on the East side won't open up until mid-February, and I won't be able to go to East Malaysia. What are my options for the end...

Still flying with my Pony - the best buddy I ever had!!

"Dive tanks or any compressed gas cylinders are prohibited as checked baggage. *A compressed gas cylinder is allowed in carry-on baggage only if the regulator valve is completely disconnected from the cylinder and the cylinder is no longer sealed (i.e. the cylinder has an open end). *The...

    travelling with backup

I was researching this issue on ScubaBoard and on the TSA site. I found this: "Dive tanks or any compressed gas cylinders are prohibited as checked baggage. *A compressed gas cylinder is allowed in carry-on baggage only if the regulator valve is completely disconnected from the cylinder and...

    Greetings from East Timor

Tanks are $10 for the basic price, but you can pre-pay for 20 for $150 ($7.50), includes weights and belt. There is a backpacker's lodge - don't know the cost, though.

    Tank racks for transportation?

What you are describing sounds interesting, but I can't quite picture what you are suggesting. (Sorry for the delay in responding.)

Cressi Rondine A VS. Mares Volo, Any Thoughts??

I dive with the Cressi Rondine A find them to be very good. They don't stir up the bottom as much as other fins that I see people using. I get good thrust, speed, and efficiency, and no cramping. They are well made and look like they'll last a long time. I can't compare to the Volos as I...

    Tank racks for transportation?

I often need to carry up to 10 tanks in the back of my double cab pickup. I currently have wooden racks (2 - 2 X 6's with scallops for the bottom, and 2 - 2X6's with double scallops for the top). This works reasonably well - it should be better when I put some rubber strips on the bottom of the...

    Towable Dive Sled

Just a reminder for those of you that talked about the simple dive sled, I'd love to see a picture, or a diagram, or even a rough sketch. We need to do some exploring for dive sites on the island and this would be perfect. Greg

    Who invented Scuba Board?

Wow! I had no idea that there was so much history, effort and good will behind this great resource. Thank you to the founders, current owner and staff, and all the moderators who make this board work. And, thank you to the advertisers who make it possible, but keep their presence gracefully...

    for the metric impaired

I dive in East Timor, using the metric system, and am dreading diving in the US again using the Imperial system. Calculations for everything are so much easier in metric. Why doesn't the dive industry switch to metric in the US, then they would be using the same system as the rest of the...

    Underwater magnifier

Great idea! Perfect for my tired eyes and looking at the great small stuff we have here. Mmmm, now where to find a magnifier in East Timor... Not to mention the lexan, oh and the silicone. Sounds like a project for my next trip to the US. Greg

    Malaria prophylaxis and diving

Very good point! Dengue is a significant problem in Indonesia. But, taking prophylaxis and prevention of getting bit will make the chances of getting one of these not nice diseases very small. Just spend as much time in the water as you can! ;) Greg

    Greetings from East Timor

Besides, diving is an adventure sport - and East Timor is an adventure. You can dive in the newest country in the world at dive sites where you might be the only team there that day, or perhaps the only ones who have been there for the last two weeks! There are still many areas to explore as...

    Oly 5050 land use

Motor Drive Mode Don't forget about the Drive selection (top, right, just behind shutter release). I don't know exactly what the difference is between the two fast settings, but the third one focuses between shots. With a fly over, skip the focus (fix that as in the My Settings), and hold down...
