British woman dead, Instructor arrested - Saranda, Albania

RIP and condolences to her loved ones. If the story is one of surfacing in distress before going down again, one does wonder if there was a missed opportunity to have a different outcome.

British woman dead, Instructor arrested - Saranda, Albania

Some other news outlets have picked up on the story and she has now been named. It appears that the wreck was at 7 - 8 metres and she had descended before surfacing again in distress and then going down again; as the instructor dived in to rescue her. An issue with her regulator before the...

The untold story of the daring cave divers who saved the Thai soccer team

Much appreciated thanks. Good to see the clarification and distinction between sedation and anaesthesia. In our paediatric medical MRI practice it was clear that most of what was termed sedation was actually anaesthesia. By odd coincidence, I believe today marks the anniversary of the third and...

The untold story of the daring cave divers who saved the Thai soccer team

Interesting you mention that in reply to ToneNQ's comment from over a year ago. You were right to suspect it odd, and in fact there is an explanation about the actual situation on the ground in his book - but of course it must have been confidential at that time.... It was a good news story...

12 boys lost in flooded Thai cave

I tried finding this on Accidents & Incidents, but then realised it was merged here. For those of you who followed this thread at the time.... I have just read the book by Rick Stanton about this and his other cave diving exploits "Aquanaut", recently published. There are many insights into the...

The untold story of the daring cave divers who saved the Thai soccer team

For those interested in more insights into this event, I have just read Rick Stanton's recently published book Aquanaut. It is very well written and I would recommend it. John Volanthen also has a book out about it.

Best signaling devices from the searcher’s point of view - update

Thanks for connecting up these threads! One item that is strongly supported on that thread is a 'waterproof marine portable VHF radio'. This thread is much longer but this item hasn't had that much of an airing here, apart from mention that it was included in the now discontinued earlier...

Updated 2018 - Emergency Equipment to assist Search & Rescue

This should to be balanced against the very many stories shared amongst dive guides in Indonesia who claim that there are many more examples of lost divers that do not make it into the international press. I remain sceptical of such stories as it is easy for rumours to gain a mythological...

Updated 2018 - Emergency Equipment to assist Search & Rescue

Thank you very much for this clarification. I find your posts very detailed and the links very useful. Reading your posts again, I think it has begun to dawn on me that what you are saying, or perhaps more than hinting, is that if someone really wants to safeguard their rescue situation when...

Updated 2018 - Emergency Equipment to assist Search & Rescue

Thank you for posting this. You appear to have thought a lot about these issues and have personal experiences as well. What do you think about the Nautilus Lifeline as an option and (apart from sausage and whistles) what else would you recommend to be added to the equipment list for diving...

Two Scuba Divers Make All the Wrong Moves

Just came across this article from a month ago. Not sure if the event has been posted before, but there are some lessons to be learnt, if not just really basic ones... Two Scuba Divers Make All the Wrong Moves

Instructor bent after running out of air at 40m

A friend's dad used to dive with the US military NATO base in Turkey in the 60s and 70s. This was his capillary depth gauge. Also made in Italy. It's also meant to help work out the stop times based on bottom times, but I can't figure out how.

Instructor bent after running out of air at 40m

All the replies so far have expressed the reading of this story with amazement and incredulity. More so when reading the transcript in the victim's own words. This article was meant to have been a story of a human triumph against disability, but our incredulity is focused on the part the story...

12 boys lost in flooded Thai cave

From the ABC video above, it sounds like it might have been to cover the medical aspects of what they were about to do.

12 boys lost in flooded Thai cave

The more I read the detail of what was accomplished, the more I wonder if the mission could have been led at all by a single person in charge. The model of multidisciplinary teamworking appears more appropriate here. Each team had its special skills, cave diving, water pumping and stream...

12 boys lost in flooded Thai cave

Some other additional snippets of information about the detailed planning involved as individuals start to debrief on return home. This one from one of the US team: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=12087824 "Anderson said divers practised their rescue...

12 boys lost in flooded Thai cave

The UK cave divers returned on a flight back to London this morning, and were interviewed for BBC Breakfast TV. Much of what was said was consistent with reports on this thread. However, there was one snippet of new information. On questioning, Rick Stanton said that when he first surfaced to...

12 boys lost in flooded Thai cave

Have a look at the sketch on Page 7, Post #68. I believe it was sketched by one of the rescue team members asking for wider assistance, after emerging from one of the initial explorations. Not sure if 'above' is the right way to describe it.
