    Career in Underwater Video

At the risk of sounding like an alcoholic... I don't have a problem! I worked as an underwater videographer for a while, and then I moved on. We seem to be arguing over who can call themself a videographer and what constitutes a career. I'm not sure it's profitable to debate those issues...

    Career in Underwater Video

That's unkind. I never said I was Howard Hall. I wasn't making documentaries for PBS. However, I was making underwater videos five days out of eight, on a commercial basis. That's different from shooting home movies. The original poster asked about "getting a fin in the door" and other...

    Career in Underwater Video

I spent most of last year in Cairns, Australia, making underwater videos of dive students, teaching underwater photography and renting digital cameras. I went there as a newly qualified dive instructor, couldn't get a job as a dive instructor (wrong time of year) and ended up being hired as a...

    Video camera, a burden?

I spent most of last year working as an underwater videographer. Prior to that I had taken photographs underwater with a small digital camera (no strobe), but I had not used a video camera. Carrying the video camera was strange at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly. After a while I was...

    New and Nervous

I was a very nervous student diver. I hated being underwater, was constantly afraid of dying and spent the final weekend promising myself that once I'd got my card, I'd never go diving again. My instructor handed over my temporary card, shook my hand and figured he'd never see me again. Three...

Some info about Phi Phi dive shops here. I don't know the people involved so can't vouch for its reliability. http://www.teknikochaventyr.se/mavin/

    Questions on Sipadan

At this time of year, given a choice between Sipadan and the Similans (Andaman Sea), I would go to the Similans. I have been to both places, and I would rate Similans in season over Sipadan out of season. A friend of mine went to Sipadan at Christmas one year and it wasn't good... seas were...

    The PADI ascent order

Hypothetically speaking, if you don't have the sense to look after your octopus, I doubt you have the commitment to learn and practise buddy breathing. It is not hard to check the octopus during a buddy check. It is not hard to secure it properly. It is not hard to get your regulator...

    The PADI ascent order

A CESA puts one diver at risk. Buddy breathing puts two divers at risk. Given that most OW divers are not trained in buddy breathing, I would expect CESA to produce fewer injuries at OW depths (ie, down to 18m). Personally, I would not dive with anyone who didn't have an alternate air...

POLL: Dive Computer w/ PC Downloadable Logs

Another vote for Suunto, I have the Vyper. I wish Suunto would get with the 21st century and make a USB interface, though. You can download the software (Suunto Dive Manager) from Suunto's Web site site (http://www.suunto.com/) to get an idea of its features. The Web site also has some...

    Getting GF into diving

I had a close friend in the UK who was a keen diver, and I was curious about it, but there was no way I was going to try it there -- too damn cold. However, now that I have done the warm water thing for a couple of years, I would consider giving it a go. If your GF is not keen, cold-water...

    RDP Table VS Wheel

The wheel is better because: - It has more depths (2m increments from 10m to 40m) - There's no mental arithmetic involved - It lets you plan multilevel dives The table is better because: - It's much cheaper If you want to become a PADI divemaster or instructor, you must learn how...

Calling all who've been...Lombok Gili Islands!

Why Trawangan? If you don't want to be with the party crowd, why not stay on one of the other islands? I was on Gili Meno a couple of weeks ago. Very, very quiet... maybe 15-20 tourists staying on the island. Kind of like being at a party that everyone else had left, but very peaceful once we...

    The Zeagle Zena note

Probably. But that's my role in life... when you need to borrow something, I am the person you borrow it from. But I like to have my stuff stashed away tidily, hence the need for pockets. I do have a detachable thigh pocket which I use sometimes. If I ever end up in a drysuit, I will...

    The Zeagle Zena note

I looking for a new BC to replace my much-loved but inadequately buoyant SeaQuest Diva QD. The obvious choice is the Diva LX, but I've also been shopping around. So, the Zeagle Zena. Great fit, plenty of lift, one strange dangling pocket, three plastic d-rings. This is a problem, because I...

    Upgrading Junior OW Card

If she's going to do AOW in the summer, she'll get a new card when she finishes the course. Why spend the money replacing her JOW card when it'll be redundant soon anyway? Z

    Safety Sausage

Nope. If I am going for my safety sausage, I am at the safety stop, and I am trying to do to things: - lure the boat into my general vicinity, and - inform the boat of my actual location, so I don't get run down I have my whistle ziptied to my BC so it is easy to find. I'm not sure I'd...

Cost of becoming a dive master

To go from OW to divemaster you have to complete the AOW, Rescue and DM courses. You also need to log 60 dives by the end of the DM course (more would be better). Plus you'll probably want to have your own dive gear and you'll need some PADI materials. I estimate I've spent around S$25,000...
