How deep have you gone on air?

Maybe even luckier than you think. At 145 7 min is outside the no deco limits on the old US Navy Tables., from surface departure to turn to the sun and swim up.

How deep have you gone on air?

Just a note, but deep diving air OR mix is a lot like heat transfer with large gradients. It is possible to pass your hand through a stream of molten steel with out burning it, provided the contact time is VERY short. Gas takeup is a lot like that in that it takes time forthe tissues and blool...

Nitrox first dive, Air second dive?

As a general rule you should do the dive with the deepest EAD first, and thien chase it with the lesser EAD dives in decending sequence. That said if you actually work out the physics, and maintain the "zero bubble" profiles and ascent rates many divers never seem to master, the sequence of...

Pensacola Dive Charters charged with spearfishing w/o license

The # of Commercial reef boat licenses are frozen, but transferable. Sale of the 'privilege" of buying a license from a boat going out of the business is worth more than the license fees, and often more than the boat. Back in the dark ages if the boat had a state fishing license, the customers...

    USS Kittiwake-Grand Cayman

CI Probably should mount an O&I light and radar corner 10-20' above the high spot to keep it from collecting unintended wreckage. Should be under $500 for the entire setup, including a solar powered LED navigation light.

    USS Kittiwake-Grand Cayman

Wrecks in over 100' will get battered by a 'cane, especially if there is no shallow reef offshore to trip the swells. All 'canes mess with the bottom, both wrecks and natural. A battered wreck is generally a better and more interesting dive than one that just got dropped.

    Master.........Really?

Sounds like the current PADI MD "course work" is equivalent to the old NAUI/NASDS/YMCA (pre-PADI) Scuba Diver cert, with about 44 more dives thrown in. Way back in the dark ages I looked at becoming a NAUI instructor, but found I didn't like dealing with students enough. The NAUI MD option...

Seems like a reasonable title for one of your skill. :D

    Lionfish invasion?

This is a reasonable alternative, small, easy to handle, and fairly inexpensive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLGt1EDWQew&feature=player_embedded

    Lionfish invasion?

A 3 prong paralyzer tip on a short pole spear works quite well for lionfish. The 3 prong keeps the fish from spinning on the tip (and thus finning you) while you cut it's throat against the bottom. I've come up with a tube stringer for them that will strip them off the tip, but pushing it off...

    Smallest fish you can spear?

Insert shat where the lateral line disappears under the gill plate. Other than that it's zen out and don't carry the body posture of a predator along with you.

    Smallest fish you can spear?

First check your local regulations as many "sport" species are not spearable in many jurisdictions due to dark age regs. As an example ANY spearing in FL fresh water used to be highly discouraged, and may still be. Other states consider spear fishing the same as worm drowning. IF it's edible...

    Catching shrimp while diving

Depends on the shrimp. Catching any mantis shrimp species by hand is tricky. Generally a 2 knife operation. One long knife blocks the hole while the other knife cuts off the sharp bits up top. A mistake with a large one can cost you a thumb or finger. I've caught Gulf "prawn" shaped shrimp by...

    Newbie specific questions

I dive mares fins, size 10.5 to 11 feet, 8-9 fins, no socks. A basic rule of thumb on full foot fins, if you can get them on your bare feet dry, they are too big. The fin then becomes the sock, and locks into the bone structure of the feet to eliminate movement between the fin and the foot...

    No BCD diving...

20 feet of 3/8 rope also makes a good improvised harness, no hardware required. A fair knowledge of knots is handy though. BTDT Rolling clove at the middle of the line (rope once cut from the roll becomes a line) just below the shoulder. Then allow enough slack to provide arm straps leading to...

    No BCD diving...

T-shirt and shorts with a 72 no air bag is usually needed. Even if dragging one it shouldn't hold any air until you surface after the dive. This is a if you don't need it, you may not want to take it thing. OTOH on the (hopefully) very rare occasions where you find yourself with an unexpected...

How to identify a Luxfer 6351 tank?

The only legal way to use non-DOT tanks in the US I know of is to have your own compressor, dive off the boat moored at your back porch, and never drive with them on the roads with more than 40psig in them. IF you can get a hard copy of the retest specs from the country where the tanks are made...

    TSA Stupidity

In both cases the FBI only reacted to the setup and false information provided by the ATF. In both cases the supervisor for ATF in direct line of command was Agent Minetta, the SAME one who was the first head of TSA. When he screwed up in Boise costing 2 lives and the taxpayers a few million...

    TSA Stupidity

The TSA was set up by the SAME individual agent that was the "agent in charge" during critical action development at both Aunt Janet's Waco BBQ yielding 80 citizen deaths, and the entrapment/framing of Randy Weaver, which just killed Randy's wife and son. The fact that TSA has no clue, doesn't...
