Buying a new strobe setup - should I go flex arm or rigid?

A quick overview of my situation - I've been doing underwater photography for several years now, currently shooting a Canon G9 in an Ikelite housing with a Sea & Sea YS-90 stobe mounted on a flex arm. I've grown tired of having to do all my exposures on manual, so I'm switching to an Ikelite...

    Camera/housing packages

I’m currently using a Panasonic GS-12 video camera in a generic Aquatix tube housing with a single record/pause button. I’d like to move up to something less bulky and with more control over the camera. My problem is trying to do this without breaking the bank. I realize that I’ll likely be...

    ID needed for SoCal invert

My wife and I were diving off Scorpion Anchorage at Santa Cruz island on Thursday. We saw a lot of these critters wedged into cracks in the rocks. They were an inch or two wide, but it was difficult to tell how long they were since they were in the rocks. Many had open star-shaped "mouths"...

So. Cal ID needed - possible salema

My wife and I were diving Casino Point on Monday 07-31. We were at about 35' deep just west of the Cousteau plaque whenwe saw this tightly packed school of fish pass by. Their size was between 8" and 12". They look a bit like salema, but their tails are yellow instead of silver. Any ideas?

Questions re: Bahamas diving in May

My wife and I will be in the Bahamas in May. We have read that water temps are usually 75-78 degrees at that time of year. Is this accurate? Also, we are trying to decide between going with Stuart Cove's and Bahama Divers. Any opinions?

Video of diving with Anacapa's sea lions

This is my second video from diving East Anacapa Island on Sept. 30. Our third dive was at Underwater Arch, which is just offshore from a sizeable sea lion rookery. And as you'll see in the video, sea lions love to play with divers... The Sea Lions of Anacapa As with the last video I...

    Video of diving Anacapa Island

This is the first underwater video footage I've shot with an actual video camera as opposed to the QuickTime movies my digital camera takes. It was shot while diving Cathedral Cove on East Anacapa Island. Check out the link below: The Cathedral at Anacapa The site hosting this video...

    Unidentified Anacapa invert

My wife and I were diving in Cathedral Cove at Anacapa Island, CA last Friday, and came across this mystery critter on the rocks at about 25' deep. It was about three or four inches long. It doesn't look like anything in my nudibranch ID book, so no help there. My wife thinks it might be a...

GPS coordinates needed for Coz dive sites

My wife and I just spent a week in Cozumel diving with Aqua-Safari, one of the local dive charters. They’re nice people, and they took us to a wide variety of locations. Unfortunately, their boat isn’t equipped with GPS, so I have no idea what the coordinates are for those spots. Since I like...

Gold Star dive at Casino Point

My wife and I were there yesterday, and we had a great time! We normally avoid the dive park on weekends in the summer due to the crowds, but since it was an event for the benefit of some important charities, we decided to go anyway. As it turned out, we had a great time! For those of you...

ID help needed for three creatures

My wife and I ran across all three of these critters while diving Casino Point, Catalina yesterday, and I'd appreciate some help identifying them. The white spongelike mass on the leaf of kelp is about an inch across. It was found at about 80' deep, at the wreck of the Sue-Jac. These things...

    Another diving video

This was my first attempt at shooting and editing underwater video (the video I posted a few weeks ago was actually the second one I ever did). As with the first one, it was taken using the QuickTime movie feature of my Olympus C-750 digital camera. I hadn’t yet thought to rig my UK C8 as a...

Re: dive reports - what are "Suunto degrees"?

This is not a rant or anything; I'm just curious about something I've read here. I've noticed while reading the dive reports thread that several people here always refer to the water temps in terms of "Suunto degrees." What do you mean by that? I'm assuming this is a reference to Suunto dive...

    Video of diving Casino Point

This is a five minute video of footage I took at Casino Point. My digital camera (an Olympus C-750) can take QuickTime movies, so I spent a day filming our three dives instead of taking my usual pictures. Here's the result: Diving Casino Point

Free (or at least cheap) online video hosting?

I have a couple of diving videos I'd like to place online, preferably as inexpensively as possible. It's not something I'll need to do often, so I don't want to spend much money on this. Since they're 50+ MB .mpeg files, though, I'm wondering if I should stream them so people can access them...

Looks like a California scorpionfish, but...

...the colors and banding are throwing me off. Could he be a Spotted or Stone scorpionfish (Scorpaena plumieri mystes) instead? Or barring that, some sort of sculpin? This is the only picture I have of it. What I do know: Seen at Casino Point Dive Park, Avalon, CA (Catalina Island) at...

La Jolla divers: when are conditions optimal for the cove?

I've wanted to try La Jolla Cove for some time now. A buddy and I were planning on it this Monday, but the San Diego lifeguard recording said it's closed due to a sewage spill. Much as I want to do some diving there, I have no desire to add the infamous "brown nudibranch" to the sightings...

Jellyfish, egg chain, or what? - Marine invert ID needed

We were diving Eagle Reef near Two Harbors earlier today, and saw this at about 40' - 50' deep, attached to a kelp strand about a foot above the bottom. It was about an inch thick, and maybe 18 - 24 inches long. I thought maybe it was a salp chain, but it seems too internally continuous, and...

    GPS coordinates for Vet'sPark/Redondo?

Anybody here have the GPS coordinates for Vet's Park and/or the canyon in Redondo Beach? My dive log has a space to enter them, and even though it's not absolutely necessary... well, what can I say? I'm just kinda anal-retentive about stuff like that. Thanks, John

Damage to wrecks at Casino Point

I was diving Casino Point yesterday (Sun. 09-26), and noticed something I'm fairly sure is new. As those of you familiar with Casino Point know, the wrecks of the Kismet and the glass-bottom boat are located at the bottom of one of the buoys that mark the dive park's border. When we were there...
