Diving buddies in Sydney Nova Scotia

Ok, the moderator must be offline. There is another board for NS divers, http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/EC_Divers You should have no problem getting on that one and quite a few of the Sydney area divers are on it too. I can also forward your email address/contact info directly to several...

Diving buddies in Sydney Nova Scotia

The divers from that area are all on this message board: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cb-diving I'm sure if you joined that board and made a post you'll have better chance to arrange something.

Look out, I'm coming to Halifax.

Hi there, the scheduled charters finish up around end-Nov but from now through the winter it really depends on weather conditions. Most of the wrecks within 130ft here are in little pieces as well. We have a "fake" wreck too, the HMCS Saguenay. There are no shore dives into the harbour...

    Cape Breton

I suggest that you get in touch with the Nervous Wrecks dive club out of Sydney (http://www.geocities.com/cbdive1/wrecks.html), they can provide detailed advice on local dive spots. The best dive spot I've seen is at Grand Narrows, which is a sunken barge below a train bridge. There is...

    Configuration Question

If the scenario you are concerned with is loss of gas in the primary tank, then you are going to the pony as bail-out and aborting the dive. Adding more air to the BC/suit appears unnecessary in that scenario assuming you are ascending. However.. an option could be to have an extra whip on the...

Should I take the orientation and do my OW dives in a dry-suit?

I used a dry suit during my OW checkouts because I seemed to freeze even in the pool. The instructor put me in the suit, without whip attached and the dump valve open. The OW checkouts were shallow enough not to worry about squeeze, and I wouldn't have the worry of learning how to manage the...

    Empress on a budget

I should add a note. These guys don't have scheduled charters that you can book on to, you actually book them for your own charter.

    Empress on a budget

Yes, you can. But you need to book well in advance to get your pick of dates. I've dived there with both Dany St-Cyr and Jean-Pierre Boullion, both excellent charters but different experiences. There are reasonably priced B&B and motel options right around Rimouski. Ste-Luce is handy to both...

Why Don't you Have a Pony yet?...or ever

I'm not arguing, just saying my TDI instructor advocates planning to 1.4. Well, at least he did a month ago.. If that's all I had, being OOA.. I'd breath it too! I've heard the suggestion (haven't tried it) you can take 1 or 2 breathes off just about anything and be ok. Hopefully one is...

is there anything i need to do prepair myself?

oops.. my remark looks a bit out of context there. It was more about reading off the board before the course, not books (responding to suggestion posted prior).. lots of debates here that would likely be confusing to someone starting out & having to follow an agencies practices. i.e. no sense...

Why Don't you Have a Pony yet?...or ever

fair enough, this board is just about hearing and speaking opinions.. I agree it's up to everyone to do what they want with what they read. I wouldn't say I haven't been tempted by the thought to carry a rich mix in the pony to help with off-gassing, but I weighed in the cons of that approach...

Why Don't you Have a Pony yet?...or ever

I wouldn't do that. Stick with air in a pony, that's standard practise. For one thing a pony is considered a bail out, carrying anything richer than the mix in the primary tank means it has an MOD shallower than your primary tank allows. That defeats the purpose of a bail-out. But...

is there anything i need to do prepair myself?

Just bring an open mind to the class, actually I wouldn't suggest reading too much before hand.. why confuse things! Before you finish the certification, try to find out as much as possible on your local diving opportunities, dive groups, etc.. just so you can develop a plan on how to get out...

near drowning due to regulator failure

well done to manage the panic, I haven't had this happen in scuba (yet).. but had enough times swimming & accidently breathing in water to know the feeling!

Ears after diving -- Sticky the day after?

yikes, doesn't sound like you should be diving until you have your ears/sinus examined by your doctor.. this isn't common at all.

Why Don't you Have a Pony yet?...or ever

You could consider an H-valve on your primary tank..? That will give you redundancy and not burden gear-wise. I'd consider the tank size though and maybe consider increasing the size.. a free-flowing reg can dump a lot of air before you can shut that post down. With travel, well I'd take a...

Does my new drysuit fit me? Have Pics....

Looks a bit big for sure, but good suggestions already to try it in a pool. The neoprene wrist seals will be turned under about 1", same as the neck seal. If they leak, there is a way to snug them up (a well placed v-notch). Good luck!

dive logs "why do you keep them"

I have an upcoming dive charter where the operator insists that we bring our dive logs. That one doesn't sit well with me, I figure they should just tell us "what they need to see" so we can confirm in advance that we have "what they are looking for". I can't imagine the reaction if a diver is...

    What's your style?

If I'm diving for marine life, the pace is quite slow and the area covered may be small. Depends on the activity I see, and sometimes I'll swim out to a particular spot (i.e. reef) & spend all my time there. For the most part I prefer a dive that is relaxed as I'm looking at details.. even on...
