Diving with Osteoarthritis in the hips

Thanks for all the good advice, Doc. I've decided to make the next 6 months an intensive PT period and will reassess then.

Diving with Osteoarthritis in the hips

I'm writing to learn about the experiences of fellow divers who are dealing with osteoarthritis of the hips. Four years ago I did 120 dives, mostly beach dives. Since then I have dove progressively less as life ... and my physical limitations ... have intervened. Today I am almost embarassed...

Best reefs for a new diver?

How new??? All of the reefs are fine, although you may want to take a "pass" on two: Loco Corente and Devil's Throat. Loco Corente is a site meaning "crazy currents" ... we literally had two groups splash in within minutes of each other and be carried in diametrically opposite directions...

Converting weights from fresh to salt water

Salt water weighs 64.1 lbs per cubic foot, while freshwater weights 62.4 lbs per cubic foot. This means, when going from fresh water to salt water, the water will be 2.7% more bouyant ((64.1 / 62.4) - 1). Take your body weight, add about 30# for your gear, and add your weights, multiply by...

    Pony bottle

If you look at the link below it shows a photo of a quick draw. It's really simple ... your BCD strap goes through the triangular part and stays there, even when you aren't using the pony bottle. The round part and two long pins are attached to your pony bottle. After your normal tank is on...

    Lobster Opening Night dive

Laguna Sea Sports always does something for opening night. Since they are the only dive shop in the area that sits adjacent to a beach, they are probably your best bet. I doubt that you'll find anyone willing to buddy up merely by showing up ... you may want to attend one of the club events to...

    Pony bottle

That has a quick-connect device which makes it simple to install and uninstall. The aluminum "holder" stays on my tank band at all times. When I'm solo diving I just snap two pins into place and the pony sits beside my regular tank. I really like it and don't notice any additional drag.

Incident At Isla Guadalupe Blog Report V.2

I THOUGHT I attached a photo but it didn't seem to work. I've put the two photos in my photo gallery, which you can get to be clicking on "photo gallery" under my photo. One photo is a topside shot of the shark with his head a bit into the cage. The other is of a great white taking the bait...

Incident At Isla Guadalupe Blog Report V.2

I was on Lawrences 2nd Isla Guadalupe trip of the season, and no shark (or human) was hurt on our trip or the one before it. We DID have one shark take the bait and head towards the cage to escape. The head stuck in the cage and it thrashed around a bit (see photo below), but it freed itself...

    Purge mask Or Reg mask

The purge valve tends to make it hard to reach around to squeeze your nose when equalizing ... and adds something else that can (and does, from what I've seen) break.

Hood face seal trimming, any tips?

I don't like the feeling of having too much hood around my face (the chin part always seems to come up too high on new hoods for me) and I like to decrease the chance that my mask will sit on top of my hood (and leak), so I always trim the hoods I buy. Once I own the hood I out it on, then put...

    Small First Aid Kit

I keep bandages that are "waterproof," plus a spray can of "liquid bandages." Also keep sudafed and afrin nasal spray in the kit. Tweezers & a small knife as well. I also have a roll of water proof medical tape ... it's sort of padded and stretchy, which helps it to flex (stays on well) and...

    Gear Storage

I put up a couple of 4' x 8' white pegboard sheets in my garage, near the hose bib. After every dive I wash my gear and hang it outside to dry just outside the garage door. Once it's dry I bring it inside and hang it on pegboard hooks (or draped over a 3" PVC bar for the exposure suits). The...

    Dry Suits

I have the Bare crushed neoprene suit, which has been very durable. My zipper location is a pain, however, because I can't zip it up by myself ... a bit of a challenge, since I do a fair bit of solo diving. I would DEFINATELY skip the Bare Rock boots -- unless you have a very small foot, you...

    Oceanic Datamax ProPlus2 problems

I had the same problem with the VT Pro ... it said I had an enormous decompression obligation after a 20' beach dive to acclimate to Cozumel. The pressure transducer was shot, and I'm glad that I carry a console dive computer as a backup. Oceanic was GREAT about replacing the VT Pro.

    Advice from the Pro's

At 40 I was fortunate enough to be able to "retire" and work when and where I wanted to. I'm too hyper to sit for long, which means I spent some time searching for a way to combine vocation with avocation. During this same time I did the work to become a scuba instructor, using the time to...
