We did it a couple year ago from the northern area of the mainland. The operator required life vests but our hooded vest were ok. We were able to swim as fast as the guides with our hooded vests. We would not have gone with a life vest, way too slow.
Padamgbai is first town and is also the jump off point to see Mola’s/Manta’s. Amed is further up the coast and is nice. Tulamben is a little further north and has a number of resorts. All places can arrange for a driver for seeing cultural sites. If you decide to stay around DSP, you can take...
If you fly in on Sunday, head north on the east cost. The area around DSP is very busy and sucks. Spend a couple of days either diving or hire a driver once you are up the coast. Lots of things to see once you’re out of the DSP traffic, just don’t look at the weaving traffic, with cycles moving...
During summer, there are lots of boats diving Komodo from budget to high end. For our big trips we use Reef and Rainforest for planning and booking. They do an excellent job. Indonesia - Reef and Rainforest
Bali and a Komodo liveaboard trip would be an excellent choice. Some of the boats depart from Bali and others from Flores which is a short flight from Bali but it saves you a day and a half steam to get to the northern parts of Komodo National Park. Komodo has a very good mix of large and...
As others have stated, the current can be very strong. On the day we went to Verde, the wind picked up during our first dive so we also had 5 to 6 feet of chop when we surfaced. Getting back on the boat was difficult. Not something a new diver would want to experience.
Shorts and tee shirts are the common dress on board. On most cruises, you will have a couple of chances to get off the boat, Jellyfish Lake and if you choose, an optional land tour at Peleliu.
As far as reef hooks, they provide them if you don't have one and will brief the group on usage...
If you are flying United, the flight from Palau is in the early am, 1:30 or 2am. The end of diving on the Tropic Dancer is Saturday mid day. Half the boat left late Saturday to catch the early am United flight and it stops at Yap on the way to Guam if that helps. Not many flights in or out of Yap.
If you are planning to travel all the way to R4, be sure to check which months are the best. North American summers are when most of the liveaboards move out of R4 to areas like Komodo. Komodo has a good mix of macro and larger stuff. Dumaguete is muck except for the Apo day trips but the...
Dave,
Missing your pezole, fried chicken and fresh baked corn bread during the surface intervals. Great cooking! Hopefully you and your family are having a great vacation.
We need to get back to CZM soon.
