    Backplate weight?

I dive singles and sometimes have to switch between steel tanks and AL80s. For me adding the 5 lb (actually 5.3 lb) weight plates when using an AL80 perfectly offsets the buoyancy differences vs something like an E7100.

    Key Largo mini-report: 3/11-12

Took a weekend trip down to Key Largo while I was in sunny, warm, dry, windy Florida on other business. Mixup on room reservations with the dive op, should've booked two nights on my own at the HP to begin with, live and learn. Saturday morning, winds at 15-20 knots, seas outside the reef...

    DIR-Why Black?

Click on User CP, then "Edit Options" (under the "Your Settings" header), "Number of Posts to Show Per Page" (under "Thread Display Options" section), change to "Show 40 posts per page" and hit the "Save Changes" button at the bottom. Viola, now you can come back from vacation but its only a...

    Looking for water/sport sandals? Recommendations?

Catherine, I think that makes you a tenderfoot. ;) Mine have never bothered my feet, in fact yesterday afternoon someone (again!) banged a tank against my toe and the Keens took all the impact. The guy was shocked I wasn't screaming in pain, but no worries. They are really good around scuba...

    Looking for water/sport sandals? Recommendations?

Keen sandals are the best for warm water dive boats. They are -- of course -- on the ugly side. But the toe covering is a must-have IMO when people are throwing tanks around on a pitching deck. Designed to be completely waterfriendly, including salt water. I have a pair of Newport's and a...

Going to Orlando- Plan to go diving

Easy, take Florida's Turnpike south to Ft Lauderdale or Key Largo. :D But budget plenty of time, today it took me 7 hours (Friday rush hour and all) from I-4 and the Turnpike to MM 100. But that's OK, I'm here! :D If you are going to do the dive quest at Epcot, its more than just a 40...

When does "Gas Management" get taught?

Exactly. There is an Essentials DVD that goes with the Essentials course. They also have Intro to Tech (ala DIR-F) and soon-to-be-released Tech Diver DVDs. The level that RB is covered in the Essentials DVD is more along the lines that you suggested for your OW class. Good luck!

When does "Gas Management" get taught?

You are missing my point. The course slide deck for that class (which is on that DVD) has a very basic introduction to the rock bottom principals we are talking about, plus a practical discussion on gas management and how all usable, 1/2 usable, thirds, etc. apply to rock bottom for different...

The Last Dive's Chrissy Rouse -- would he have survived today?

"Friends don't let friends dive air." (TM) StSomewhere I agree that what got the whole ball rolling was the fact that they were trimix trained but dove air to save money. The ocean can be a dangerous place, esp. that far from help, to not take all possible precautions. IMO.

    No DAN in Coz?

These chambers are all affiliated with the same organization named SSS (Sub-aquatic Safety Services), it looks like they could be trying to stick it to the norteamericanos. From what I've read here and elsewhere, SSS is charging DAN USA substantially higher rates than other dive insurance...

    Apeks XTX Line

If the sales information can be trusted, the second stage was redesigned and exhaling is easier due to the new exhaust valve. That seems to be part of where the better WOB numbers come from. For my part, my TX50 gives me all the air I've ever needed, so I don't know how much is useful and how...

    Vytec vs Vyper

Vie is right. In gauge mode, the Vytec not only tracks the overall dive time in minutes, but the counter in the middle section does minutes and seconds and can be reset in mid-dive for timing stops. Very nice. But its a lot of money for a bottom timer. A better question is how many tech...
