I'm done with teaching. It's time.

I may not understand it correctly but the agencies I looked at was DAN and PADI's agency and one other who's name I do not recall but they all had similar terms.

I'm done with teaching. It's time.

I have taught for over 18 years and teach in the mid-atlantic area which is very seasonal. For me I try to make at least $10 an hour after expenses as a part timer. I love diving and I am able to keep my gear current with key-man rates and do trips to travel destinations world wide at budget...

Looking for a Weekend Dive Destination

One more thing. Neighborhood is a bit sketchy. We found hypodermic needles in the park. Be careful when walking.

Looking for a Weekend Dive Destination

Blue Heron is a long dive because it is 15-20 ft max. The marine life is fantastic (mostly juveniles) It can only be done an hour before and an hour after high tide (slack tide) for best visibility. More marine life in a 2 hour 1 tank dive than 10 hours diving in Bonaire.

Forgetting to turn on computer before the dive

Yes check for sure. My regimen is to set gas % when reg goes on tank. and turn on computer when "pools opened by crew after dive briefing then air on (all the way) and final pressure verrification. Oh, I always dive with 2 computers. (I don't trust electronics). At start of dive verify...

People embarrassed to do pre dive buddy check?

Good plan, I subscribe to the idea that the most dangerous thing in the ocean is your panicked buddy.

Forgetting to turn on computer before the dive

It depends on your computer. Some turn on automatically, some turn on when you push the button to start dive and sometimes when they turn on at depth they go into gauge mode for 24 hours. Best to establish a regimen to turn on computer before you turn on your air. Make a plan and stick to it.

I'm done with teaching. It's time.

Jim Speaks truth. One of my concerns with the liability insurance is if you are with a shop you are grouped to a certain insurance package (the group). If you are an independant your group might be PADI or DAN or other agency. Should anyone in your group have an incident and found responsible...

Is a Back Plate w/ Wing really cheaper?

B/PW was cheaper to start but once I started adding longer inflator hoses to Wing, second harness, weight pockets, etc There were no differences in cost and some redundant expenses. I am now working on perfecting my trim. I have a Zeagle Ranger that is excellent. I can drop down to any depth...

Ask your instructor to show you how to use the DSMB!

The PADI AOW crew pac includes a DSMB/SMB. IMO It is completely unsuitable it does not include a reel or line. It does not seem to be reinforced at the attachment area. it seems as something to be deployed once you reach the surface. I am worried that it gives It gives new students a false...

Reg Blow Out at 60 ft

You did solve the issues. Otherwise there would not be a thread:-) Good job. If the front cover comes off your regulator and the large rubber diaphram falls off your regulator will shut off air flow and not freeflow. The diaphram requires a slight inhalation effort of the diver to push on the...

    O2 cleaning question

I saw the question of ow to tell O2 clean air. You should ask to see the most recent test data for the shops air. Good shops usually test it quarterly and at least anually. The test should be certification to"Class E" Air to be O2 Clean. I think Class D is suitable for humans and Class E is...

How to find an excellent SCUBA class

Interesting post. There are several issues that are worth considering. Do you get a good understanding of what the course requires? What do you think you would want to do first as a diver? What are your objectives? Photography, wrecks, marine life, hunting, exploring, treasure etc. Does...

    Diving with Scouts

Sounds like a great experience. I just got some scouts through the pool part of their training. The boys were quite motivated. We have our quarry dives next month. If you want to spoil them take them to BSA Seabase in the Florida Keys. Do it in December or at Easter so they wont get to...

What equipment do I need for night diving

I find tank lights make finding your buddy easier and keeping track of him or her. Its quite an issue if they turn off the lights to look at the phoporsence or some other reason and you cant find your buddy. I do not use the chem-lights as they are a disposal issue. There are plenty of good...
