My family and I used the insect repellant Natrapel, which has 20% picaridin, on our last two trips to Roatan and it worked great for us. We didn't have any problems with mosquitoes or sand flies.

Another vote for Buddy Dive. You can't beat the convenience of the drive through and they always have plenty of Nitrox tanks. I also use the small tanks and I've never had a problem getting them at Buddy Dive. We've never used Captain Don's, so I can't comment on their dive operation or tank...

There are plenty of places to stay on Bonaire that are not dive resorts. You could rent a house/condo by using one of the vacation rentals by owner sites or Sunbelt Realty, to name a few options.

My family and I LOVED the seaplane tour! It was a highlight of the trip.

I was on the same dive as greylion and it was AMAZING!!! San Juan was our second dive and it was really beautiful. I've never seen an actual field of heather, but that's what I picture it looking like in my mind.

We do the same thing. I think we do get home faster and it's MUCH less hassle.
