    Best time for training?

I am interested in sidemount is-as-much as I have never tried it and would like to see what the fuss is all about. It has been recommended to me several times as occasionally I miss a dive because of my lower back. I currently dive with DIR tendencies myself as my dive buddies insisted before...

    Best time for training?

I spoke with the person that gave me the info about GUE, perhaps I misunderstood, he said what he was trying to get across to me was that GUE will not count the dives I make with the researcher. He said that in order to log them and progress through GUE levels I have to be diving the GUE system...

    Rookie Diver mistake: uncontrolled ascent

I made the same mistake in my first year of diving I was in Seychelles, my original OW course was taught over two days by a retired Brit living in a small hut on the beach in Phuket, and I was a young (18 y/o) cocky Marine. So either he failed to mention Boyle's or I didn't care enough to...

    Spatial Disorientation?

Do you have trouble with it when on a down line? I usually ascend and descend my anchor line on the wrecks, especially deeper ones, but this wreck is fairly shallow and was near the shipping channel so my wife had to move the boat while I was down, and I made a free ascent. Perhaps it is what...

    Best time for training?

I mentioned to AJ in a pm that the info I got was from a friend that dives but he is not GUE, so AJ filled me in a little on how it works. I called Edd and he said he had openings in November, I should pm Jim though because I have called twice with no response, perhaps I was given the wrong...

    Best time for training?

Thanks, I am looking more at November time frame or February? As far as GUE It was my understanding that it is not a GUE issue at all. The directors of the two research programs I am interested in do not abide by GUE, so I was lead to believe I would not be permitted to dive with them if my...

    Best time for training?

I have come to the point where I want to venture into cave diving, I have been diving off and on for 12 yrs now and have been routinely diving under the ice here in Michigan. I went to Ginnie last February and spoke to the young lady working the counter at the dive shop. I got a short list of...

Was Sheck Exley the first to introduce the "octopus?"

In Caverns Measureless to Man Sheck says he was "one of the first" but admits there could have been others. He says that he "thinks" he was the first to introduce it to cave diving but again follows up with, "to my knowledge." I am a youngin I didn't start diving until 2000, so I have no first...

    Spatial Disorientation?

Just looking for a little insight on what caused my experience last week. I was on an air dive with simple profile, max depth had been 89 FFW for 14 minutes on a wreck, I then ascended to 67 FFW for 22 minutes, then began to surface. My ascent rate was variable because of currents but was...

    Cold water Q's

I broke down and spent the cash, I went and got measured for a DUI TLS350. I put off a lot of other spending to make this happen but man I love this suit! I also picked up a new Halcyon eclipse. I have been diving Lake Superior all summer long and with the exception of the one time I flooded the...

    Adaptive techniques

I have not checked out side mount yet, that may be an option. I have also considered a rebreather, although I have never hefted one so I haven't a clue what the weight comparison would be. Pete, I actually have that book, and do those stretches daily! I have a lot of scar tissue covering my...

    Adaptive techniques

I am looking for some ideas on how to adapt my procedures. I am a Marine Corps Vet and had serious back injuries which I have for the most part recovered from. But several times now since returning to diving I have aggravated my lower back while suiting up. I use a Halcyon Pinnacle 30, the plate...

Wreck fatality near Point Iriquious, Michigan

Just wanted to offer my sympathies to Capt Brian and your crew, it's always tough to lose a diver. The word around here is that he had not touched his O2, but that is coming through 3rd and 4th person. The original source being a LEO they say.

I Need a camera for research

I wonder what the buoyancy of this contraption will be with acrylic? Do you Think I will need to offset it either positively or negatively? I think i'll make sure it's quite negative, to help with stability on the bottom, then just send it up with my lift bag when I'm done.

I Need a camera for research

I mean close as in 3-4 inches. But like I said I also need wide angle for perspective. @Mark, that is an outstanding idea, I have some acrylic left over from a tank I made. Great Idea thanks, when I get done building it I'll post pictures of it for you

I Need a camera for research

That's what I was worried about, the functionality at depth. I need to be able to take closeup pictures of Zebra Mussel formations on wrecks, water intakes, and power/communication lines. Also I need to be able to take wider angle pictures of algae blooms and mussel colonies. Also I want to be...

I Need a camera for research

Awesome guys great info thanks, I'll take a look at all of those, what about the 10 Bar housing for the D90, I can get a D90 with lens for 1100, and a case for 600, then I would need to pony up for the strobe out of pocket. The 10 Bar says they are rated (go figure) to 10 Bar or 300'.

I Need a camera for research

Larry I appreciate your advice, but that is exactly what I am trying to avoid by posting in the Photography section. I am Nitrox, Trimix, Dry Suit certified, I have a little over 400 dives. I am diving with a TDI certified wreck and advanced wreck, trimix, advanced trimix and deco diver. I own...
