HI Turisops - yes you are correct - you would need to add a remote sensor and a sync cord to make it work reliably as a slave strobe. The triggerfish sensor seems to be the most commonly used for cave diving photography. Liz Rogers has a good write up here: Off camera strobes
Just a quick follow up - I'm happy to report that Christian, product manager at Tusa reached out to me and arranged to ship me a new strobe immediately rather than having to wait for the usual return and RMA process.
He was even kind enough to send out a YS-D2 as a free upgrade instead...
