    The Elusive Spiegel Grove

Dad and I dove the Spiegel back in September last year. Gorgeous wreck - well worth it (we dove with Silent World when we went - super laid back guys, smaller boat which was nice since the previous day diving had been a bit of a "party boat" situation with another dive op) Sounds like you've...

    Night dives = AOW?

Seems to depend on the dive op and the site. I recently dove in the Keys, and one dive op would not allow me to do night and other certain dives (speigel grove) as I was not AOW (I've got about 80 dives, and am more competent then most AOW divers I know - just never bothered to do AOW). The...

How many of you here practice apnea

Sounds like youre doing fine! Personally - I used to be able to eat up a bottle of air around the 45 min mark on a similar dive (I am assuming you're diving nitrox rather then getting beyond deco limits). Now, with 50 more dives under my belt, working on my boyancy, and just being more relaxed...

    Dealing with long hair

    I also wear a do-rag. Works great.

Planning a dive before a flight is a bad idea

My solution - snorkle the last morning :) hell, it's still in the water - and there are still fish! I'll admit to having done SUPER shallow dives (around 15' depth max, more like 10' most of the time) within the supposed "no fly" limits. I didn't die. I DO NOT RECOMEND ANYONE DO THIS!

    PADI members expelled

I won't go into names and details here - but the short story is - a certain shop north of Toronto was founded. Said instructor has some reputation for shady dealings, and eventually is expelled for harassment. The shop is sold to another man who HAPPENS to have the same first name as Mr...

    PADI members expelled

What everyone else said. I have only ever heard of DMs/instructors getting expelled, and it's usually for some seriously bad **** (we had one up in our neck of the woods about 15 years ago due to sexual harassment of a female student for example).

    Are you a garbage collector?

Best haul I ever got was after a snorkle up next to town dock in Bonaire right after new years. Came back with 2 hands full of beer bottles, a wine bottle, and a whole lot of fireworks debris. I went snorkling with friends, and got bored following the tour operator....

    Hassling the Fish

I rarely lake dive anymore - but when we did, and it was fishing season dad had this very bad habit: He'd take note of the location of clusters of rocks where particularly large bass were territorial over, then go back with the boat and a fishing rod. It was one of his favorite tricks to amuse...

zipper question--what's the point of back zips?

If you check out the catolog direct from the company they often offer both - I was parusing the Henderson catolog just the other day and noticed this.

    Hassling the Fish

I've never been to Cozumel, so didn't realize it was a marine park! Now, had your location been Bonaire I'd have caught the joke :)

    DCS and Flying

Short answer: You'll be fine. Long answer: Dive tables don't even start untill 35' If your pool only goes down to 19' you're not even close. My dive computer won't even give me a NDL untill I get down below 20' - and even then it's something stupid like 300 minutes. Also - rescue classes...

    weight belts or integrated?

I didn't read the whole post here - but I'm a belt person, I dive in the neoprene pouch type which I love. That said, as a girl I don't have a problem with the belt sliding down or anything. The reason I don't like intigrated weights is I still dive with about 14lbs of weight even though I'm...

    Hassling the Fish

It's opinion partially, as well every article I've read about decreased fish populations never once have I seen a statement that "divers chased them away". It's always a decreased suitability of habitat as caused by climate change/polution/coral destroyed due to weather/overfishing/etc...

    Hassling the Fish

I don't think that divers depopulate the reef - unfortunately chaging climate and polution do this for us. I do strongly believe in don't touch/move/harass the sea life though. I've dove with DMs who have learned to move with an animal in order to naturally keep in close for the divers to...

New diver, questions regarding weight belts and buoyancy.

Personally, I'm not a fan of intigrated weights, I don't find them to be more comforable, or a convenience in any way, but I know I'm a bit of an odd man out in this regard. The metal BP/W idea is a good one - but in the meantime if you don't want to go crazy on the new equipment I got a...

    Smoking on a dive boat

I don't think I've ever been on a dive boat with a smoker - either in FL or Bonaire where I've done most of my boat diving. That said, I would probably not care all that much as long as it wasn't blown specifically in my face, or in an enclosed area. I agree wholeheartedly though about not...

Starting Over After a Few Years and Terrible Experience

I could see a quick pull down to 20 feet could cause the damage - I remember as a kid diving right down to the bottom of the deep-end knowing nothing about equalizing would get pain at the bottom (about 9'), and often a nosebleed when I came back up. I admit to using the "pull buddy down"...

Starting Over After a Few Years and Terrible Experience

I would get a once over from a doc that specializes in divers very first of all. If you check out clean, then start researching dive shops. For you, it might be best to organize private/semi-private classes rather then a big group to give you a very comfy and safe environment to learn...

Yet again another post begging OW divers to stay out of the caves!

shame people are so dumb. I mean, if you WANT to go do caves so terribly badly on an OW cert, there are SO MANY dive shops in this area that take guided dives down with just an OW cert (I did a few back in '07 with american pro divers out of Crystal River - great experience).
