Great Lakes: The best way to dive them

Well I'll dive back in St. Lucia or St. Thomas in a heartbeaat, I didn't know new oceans' were on the table here. I'll let the wife know! ha ha ha

Great Lakes: The best way to dive them

I'll probably get some grief here. I really enjoyed Tobermory last summer and am considering a return trip this year but I'm on the fence. The location was great, the wrecks were great, the dive operators were great, and the location is beautiful. However, it is a really really really really...

After practicing all winter I finally did my first dives on the Great Lakes (pics)

Congrats! I think you will really enjoy the diving up here.

Liveaboards on a Budget- a Possibility?

Sorry to bump the thread after so long. What is it about the liveaboard that attracts you? When I was in St. Thomas USVI last March I was getting between 2 and 4 dives in a day and still got to sleep in an awesome condo at night. I went out with three different operations (all great) and saw...

Drysuit Boots Don't Have to Make Your Current Fins Obsolete

Just throwing this out there for general information. My dry suit has soft socks instead of rock boots so I use a cheap pair of hightops for traction. They are the same size as the booties I normally wear when diving wet and they fit in my normal fins just fine.

Request battery picture/diagram Aqualung VEGA 2

Hello, I recently received an Aqualung Vega 2 with the 5 "D" cells arraigned radially. However, it does not power up. Given the many warnings about battery direction, I figured I should ask for assistance before mucking about too much with it. Can anyone snap a pick of their battery...

    "Dive Masters" web-series

Hey, awesome video guys! Glad to see the Kickstarter project paid off (speaking as a proud backer). Can't wait for the series to officially launch. Dive Masters by Jason McAnear — Kickstarter

Another "Yay! I did it!" post, and a question about dive travel

Glad to hear you are booked for Coki Beach - that is where I completed my OW last December. You will *really* like diving with Rick and Pete Jackson, they run a professional operation and never have more than 3-4 people per DM. Additionally, the bay is fairly shallow with great viz., which...

New diver having integrated weight problem

The weight belts don't work for me because they just slide right off my hips, so I bought very nice BC with integrated pockets. I have still had problems with weights. One day an entire pocket fell out with 10lbs of soft weights (I guess I brushed the velcro with my arm, glad my buddy was...

    Log book mockery?!

Agree, if only so that you have the proof you need to participate in dives or to take advanced classes. The operator on my last boat dive visually verified I had recent cold water deep diving experience before he would let me go on the 100+ ft New York and the 85ft North Star. I also feel...

    Boat diving questions

It really depends on where you are diving. Caribbean operators seem to include the tanks and weights in the cost of the dive, and BCs are maybe $10 for the day. This is because nobody, but nobody, is going to fly with tanks and weights, and most people do not like to pack their BC. I should...

Kickstarter: Identifying Sponge Disease on Florida Reefs

Hello everyone, Jose Lopez, PhD, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to discover why barrel sponges are under attack. The project has very modest goal of $17,600, but he has only raised about 5% so far with just two more weeks to go. As with every Kickstarter campaign, this is...

    Who has dived Gilboa Quarry?

I didn't really have a problem with the condition of the site, and was pleased to see they had rigged up a nice ramp to replace some broken/unsafe stairs on the first dive platform. It was unfortunate that the staging area for the next generation of attractions took up so much space, but I...

    Wing BCD and Weight issues

Seconded on the DUI Weight & Trim harness. I bought one a couple of weeks ago after almost having a belt and hard weights slide past my non-hips. I only have four dives with the harness, all drysuit, but I really like it so far. Cheers

    Nervous about being too cold!

Cmneus, As I was saying in another thread, I also got certified in the Caribbean but have a dozen dives in Lake Huron. I was using 7mm shortie with a 7mm farmer john, 1mm diveskin, and hood and gloves. I was warm on every dive, even having to flowthrough a few times. I admit that my head...

    Who has dived Gilboa Quarry?

    > TheHobster, how was the diving? I was there last weekend for the DUI drysuit event and it was pretty silty, but they had a little over 100 divers in the quarry that day so it is to be expected. Cheers

New to Diving the Great Lakes

Going back to some of the OP's other original questions... I also got certified in the warm Caribbean, but I have recently done about a dozen dives in Lake Huron and I'll say that it really is like night and day. 75 feet in open ocean is about the same as 30 feet in Huron, in my (limited)...

Halcyon Infinity vs. Traveler (leaning toward Zeagle Stiletto) / others?

Although I'm a fairly new diver (34 so far) I am already moving away from both integrated weights and belts. I bought a DUI harness a couple of weeks ago and did 4 drysuit dives with it last weekend. I can't tell you what a difference it makes, I felt much more connected to the weights than...
