To be honest 2km x 2km grid was just a rough guess given by how far I was from the dive boat when the 2nd grid started. The first grid seemed to start fairly close to where I was dropped off. I could be off by quite a bit. The grids were at least that big though.

Personally I would just buy the manual for the course, read it through, and become comfortable with everything in the book. There really isn't A LOT to the course but what there is you should know well. Once you are comfortable with everything you can just get then find your instructor. It's...
