    Question about boats at CCV

Earlier this month I went with a group of 21 of varying skills. One boat, one divemaster. The leader of the group wanted to keep everyone together. There were some instructors and divemasters in the group so they helped those that had issues. It worked out just fine. Optimally however, I...

    seawing nova fins

I do the regular frog kick. I had to look up what the modified is, not being a student of the subtleties of various types of frog kicks. I just do what works and don't think about it. If I'm trying to go somewhere fast (which is rarely) I'll flutter but most of the time it's frog kick...

    seawing nova fins

I've used mine to frog kick for years. I frog kick probably 60%-75% of the time. No issues at all. My only issue was the cost and they are so big they are tougher to pack than other fins. I also like that they are very slightly positively buoyant which helps getting back on a rocky dive boat...

    Backplate travel system

Personally, I put my steel backplate, wing, STA, SMB, reel, mask, boots, socks, 2 wetsuits (shorty and full), lights, batteries, 2 dive computers and regs, all scuba stuff except fins (I'd pack them except they are too long for my carry-on) go in my generic carry-on bag that weights in at 35lbs...

    Not Enough Weight?

What wetsuit / drysuit are you wearing (I didn't see mention of this in your post)? Fresh or Salt water? Both have a HUGE impact in your weight requirements. Jim

    Nausea /gag underwater??

I had this problem for years. As previously mentioned, I suck on a piece of hard candy immediately before every dive and haven't had a problem since. It moistens my mouth enough that I don't gag. Before finding this trick I would gag almost every dive and would have to remove the reg and...

    Traveling with SCUBA gear

I typically use a regular 30 year old non-descript carry-on suitcase for all my gear except fins which are too long to fit in the bag. I have a backplate/wing which i disassemble, a shorty and full wetsuit, prescription mask (and backup prescription mask), booties, regulator, suit and dive...

    Aeris Epic - date issue

I have an Epic and downloaded some dives the other day and mine is working fine... Have you tried alternative software (just to eliminate one of the variables)? I am using a Mac rather than a PC so I can't make any software suggestions. Jim

where can i get mask prescription lenses

Are you near or far sighted? I'm near sighted and went the mask and custom lens option at a cost of around $250 several years ago. I also bought a cheap $50 backup mask from www.getwetstore.com as a backup since I cannot find the floor without my glasses. I misplaced my expensive mask in...

    Greetings from Texas!

Congratulations on the new hobby... A suggestion, take the Spring Lake dive class in San Marcos and become a volunteer. Very rewarding and one of the best fresh water diving locations in Texas (and it's right in your back yard). I live up in the DFW area so I don't get down there as often as...

    Steel tank affecting compass?

If I remember my physics class correctly, you are correct. It sure did drive me nuts trying to figure out what the hell was going on with my compass. The weird thing is it wasn't pointed to the small metal ring, it was variable. Anyway, I'm doubtful that a steel tank would affect particularly...

    Steel tank affecting compass?

I had an analog compass that I had used for years with mixed results. I loaned it to an instructor friend conducting a navigation class and he brought it back to me and told me that it doesn't work right. It didn't seem logical since it's such a simple machine. Some time later I realized that...

How To Keep My Mouth Moist?

As you get more comfortable with diving, you wont give it a thought. It's just like taking the reg out and replacing it in your training drills. During the process, water gets in your mouth and you expel it by blowing the water out of your mouth and the reg. As for drinking, you use a straw...

How To Keep My Mouth Moist?

I have the same problem... Many have said to hydrate before you dive... Didn't help. Others said to use Biotene mouthwash... Didn't work for me. I bought a moisturizing regulator... Didn't work for me. I usually take out my regulator, swish out my mouth and put the regulator back in. That...

Rolling gear bag suitable for wet gear

Here's what I started doing my last trip and probably will continue to do... I wear the BCD (or backplate in my case). My shorty, fins, mask and anything else can fit in a small mesh bag that I can easily carry or sling over my shoulder. It's a lot easier than even the roller I used to use...

    Scubapro Fins?!?

I do have a pair of SP Jet fins too. They are OK but I prefer the Novas. LOTS of folks love the Jet fins. Every time I try the Jet's again I always go back to the Novas. The Jets are very heavy in comparison to the Novas, but are more compact. To me, the foot pocket is not as comfortable as...

    Scubapro Fins?!?

I haven't used the Gorillas (which I know is your question) but.... I have the Novas and love them. They are the most comfortable and effortless fin I've ever used. That said, they have a couple of drawbacks to me... 1. As you mentioned, the cost. 2. Their size. The length isn't...

Weights and travel, TSA, priority mail

Well Doc, I've been traveling with 5 lbs of soft weights for 10 years (2-3 times a year) and have never had a problem putting them on carry-on other than them making me take them out to show them (which is why I always put them on top). Others may have other experiences but that has been mine. Jim
