Wow, he told us in class they need to be inspected once a year. Guess he should have probably added if we do it in his shop it should be at the beginning of January.
This is a great idea!
Something interesting.
The most challenging exercise was to do shared breathing while removing the BC and putting it back on. Now the interesting part, I was looking on youtube at the different videos and in all the cases they would remove the BC and put it back on the way...
He didn't pressure us to buy the mouth piece or a scuba gear package. (there were no scuba gear packages setup in the store) But he did reiterate quite a few times about the sanitary issue with the snorkel. To be honest if he really wanted to make money he would have been better off to just rent...
Random thought.
I was just thinking about the course, and his main selling point for buying a snorkel was a bit shady. He mentioned that you want to own your own snorkel as you dont know where it's been. Now that i think back to the course, what about the regulator? I doubt he cleaned them...
Love the humor! I feel at this point I am scuba forum certified. All that's left is for me to do is take the computer in the bathtub and make a couple more posts :)

One other question, should have maybe asked earlier. Do people practice in the pool/class room...
The instructor for the class was the LDS operator, otherwise I would have escalated on their end. I'll be honest i dont have so much an issue with the money, I just don't want to spend the next 6 Sundays waking up early to take the class again.
I think he lost a lot more business then he can imagine, I had several friends who sort of used me as a guinea pig to see how the classes were. I can assure you after this mishap none of them will be visiting his shop.
"I’m not sure why we have an expectation in SCUBA that extra class time shouldn’t cost more."
Agreed, and to be honest if he told us ahead of time i think most of us would have been more then happy to have taken extra lessons and pay for them especially if he threatened to fail us...
Agreed, going to contact SSI tomorrow and see their thoughts. (we all passed the written exam, he had no control over that) Not sure why he didnt let us pass the practical part.
Some prepaid the $180, not sure if they will ever see their money again. To retake the entire course they instructor offered for $50. (seems a bit weird)
I dont know if this adds anything to this, but the group of students were from a variety of backgrounds. (military, surfer, grad student...
We paid $139 for the book, classroom session and the pool sessions. (the certification dives at the quarry was another $180)
Breakdown hour-wise.
6 hours of classroom
12 hours in the pool
Groupon Link (For $139, you get admission for one to a Basic Open-Water course, a pre-requisite to...
I am not sure about others but he never pulled me aside and in the water he was always giving us the "A-okay" symbol and rarely correcting us. Also if he pulled us aside and mentioned we needed more pool work we would have probably agreed. In addition many people had pre-planned vacations and...
We all passed the written test, the two people that failed the first time retook it the next class. (we had one make up class as the pool was closed one of the days) He just felt based on the pool work we werent ready for the quarry. I'll be honest I am still in shock that not a single person...
Hello All,
I am hoping someone can shed some light on my situation. I recently took the SSI open water dive class with the hopes of being certified at the end. Everything was going great, the class had 7 people and we were meeting every Sunday at 9am. On the very last class at the end, the...
