I used a Nanuk 960 w/ pick and pluck foam - exterior 25.5" x 20" x 14.5" = 60" within the limit for regular checked baggage.
It's 40lbs packed and ready to fly.
Heading to Bonaire for a week of shore diving
First time travelling with a DPV, this should be fun :D
Looked at the VRX for a while but went for the blacktip for the following reasons...
- quality generic off the shelf batteries that I can fly with, easy battery swap at dive site or on boat, plus options for fast charging (~1hr) and storage charging (for long term storage).
- size and weight -...
Not loud / annoying - this one was grunting a bit pulling 2 divers in tech config, that was 3rd speed if I remember.
Tone varies with speed/rpm/load w/ 7 & 8 being the most noticeable.
My blacktip has no problem pulling 220lb me in cold-water (3ish deg C) drysuit side-mount config.
Speed "1" on and off the trigger to keep up w/ swimming divers, speed "3-4" comfortable cruising, "5+" you really get going.
Towed my buddy (also a big guy) for an hour long quarry dive at various...
Play with your compass location if at first it doesn't work or is affected by current draw etc.
Mine works great - not affected by scooter operation when mounted here...
Quarry wasn't frozen over yet so I got mine wet yesterday
Coldish. -2C / -9 deg C (15 deg F) windchill, water temp: 3 deg C ( 37 deg F)
Out of the box…
- Seems tougher than it looks - well moulded / machined material, quality feel and finish
- Trigger feels great
- Nose cone heavy/robust
-...
Choose the capacity that you think will give you what you want - if that is 9ah or greater then choice is clear - right now that will be flexvolt. If you're comparing 6ah XR vs 6ah flexvolt at the same price then I'd go for the XR. Smaller, lighter more room to adjust for buoyancy / trim.
Word...
Flexvolt packs...
- internally 3x 20v (5S1P) packs with a switching mechanism to deliver 20v (5S3P) or 60v (15S1P)
- large form factor (15 cell battery / 3 rows, 5 cells per row) eg. DCB609 or DCB612
(blacktip uses it as a 20v battery so 60v capability is of no benefit in this application)
XR...
@ben.mcgeever - thanks for the detailed post
I'll be using mine in cold fresh water
- is neutral buoyancy achievable w/ 12ah batteries in fresh water?
- is neutral buoyancy / reasonable (tow behind) trim would be possible w/ 6ah 20v (not flexvolt) batteries?
Would be willing to give up some...
