    Sardine Run 2015

There are a lot of local dive centres operating special dives during the Sardine Run. I'm heading to Crystal Diver's SA in three weeks time to check it out, and they are located at the Blue Marlin hotel so you won't need to travel between the hotel and the dive shop. It's all nicely bundled...

Top 5 Favourite Dive Sites in South Africa

I have only dived in Cape Town so I probably can't say the best sites in South Africa, but as far as Cape Town goes my favorites are definitely A-Frame (for a nice swim through), Pyramid (to dive with the Cow Sharks) and then of course Smitswinkel Bay (for the many wrecks). I'm heading to...

Couple of days to dive in cape town or better to save money for Zanzibar

And? Did you do any dives? How was it? I always enjoy hearing about experiences from people that aren't from the region.

Missing Diver in Cape Town, South Africa

I think that pretty much sums it up. I might have stopped the analysis before the condolences, but I suppose however harsh, it's not incorrect. Then again I did not know the diver personally and as such I might be more inclined to accept the reality than those who knew him. For the sake of the...

    Who And Where?

Ahaa, so as usual I'm digging up old(er) threads :D Hi, my name is Martin and I too am a member of OMSAC. I have been living in Cape Town since April 2012 after moving down from Pretoria. I did my OW and AOW certs the May after I moved here. Not surprisingly, I frequently dive with the rest of...

Missing Diver in Cape Town, South Africa

The report states that a) he silted up the engine room and b) penetrated deeper in an attempt to exit. From this, I gather that he consciously and willingly entered the engine room (as it's impossible to do so by accident), and the fact that his attempt to exit in fact led him deeper into the...

Missing Diver in Cape Town, South Africa

I find it very strange that it's taking this long to find him. Smitswinkel is not exactly famed for it's lush kelp forests. It's basically sand and wrecks. If he's not in a wreck, he would have drifted. Worst case scenario, I sure hope EMS finds him before other divers do. Would be a nasty...

    Show me your mount!!!

There's my rig: 10-minute DIY PVC GoPro Dive Video Rig - YouTube And here's my extremely crude floodlight setup: I wanted to build something, and needed lights for our night dives so I ended up constructing these guys from scratch. Not ideal (I'll probably end up tossing them in the bin) but...

GoPro2 + Wifi Backpack at COSTCO for ONLY $199

Right guys, who's willing to ship one of those to South Africa? The Hero2 alone trades for R4000 (US$470) over here which is just ridiculous...

    Hero3...Oh no. I just bought a Hero2.

I must say the one thing I appreciate about gopro is their support for older models even with newer ones available. I doubt that you will ever have to upgrade just to avoid running out of spares or support. My only reason for upgrading would be my technophilia bugging me... I can already record...

    How dangerous is diving?

As long as you know the risks, know and follow the rules and have you gear serviced and/or replaced according to manufacturer/industry standards, I'd say the risk is fairly low. You have a much bigger chance of pegging as a result of gear failure and stupidity than of attacks from marine life...

How do you carry your GoPro

Thanks! Yeah just before we went for a dive, I found that I still had a bag of tethers lying around to I made sure everything was attached nicely. Also grabbed the wrist strap from my old dive torch and secured it on there. I took it for a spin yesterday and it works like a charm!

Yeah we also clean pick up the odd bottle and what not during fun dives, but these events are directed at the sites where people dont usually dive, like the harbour for instance.

International Coastal Cleanup / Dive Against Debris

Dive Against Debris | Project AWARE It's that time of the year again folks! Where we take to the waters and do our part in preserving our oceans for future generations. I must add that I feel that this should be an almost natural mindset while diving, and not just an annual event. If you do...
