US Government sells the federal helium reserve

It looks like the Biden administration is in the process of selling the entire Texas helium reserve. According to the person in this video, it accounts about 33% of all helium. Get ready for even greater shortages and massive price hikes. There's never been a better time to switch to closed...

    Starlink Internet

I had a terrible experience with eero myself. Eero is okay for most users who don't have uplinks above about 500Mbps. I had a bunch of eero pro 6e's, as Frontier was giving them away free for a while. The eeros were a constant problem for me. They don't play well with other routers, you...

    Starlink Internet

The difference in latency between starlink and other sat internet systems is because starlink sats are in low earth orbit (approximately 342 miles from the surface) and hughesnet/other are in high earth orbit (approximately 22,000 miles from the surface). If the signal didn't take any time at...

    Starlink Internet

Outdoor antennae are more susceptible to lightning than a buried cable. You can get lightning arrestors, I use them for my amateur radio antennae. Good ones are kind of expensive (I use polyphaser IS-50UX-C0 $70 ea). I've had big copper antennae sticking 30 feet up in the air for a few years...

    Starlink Internet

Wired networking is usually going to be superior to wireless. The only exception to that (hence the nearly) is your ability to make the connection and make it conveniently. All things being equal of course (the speed of your wireless radio and the speed of your wired network device). You'll...

    Starlink Internet

Try some direct burial Cat8 cable. Each pair is shielded individually, and the whole arrangement is also shielded. I've had excellent results from chinesium cat8 cables, although I've never tried this particular brand. I've also only used it at 10Gbps as I don't have any 40Gbps transcievers.

    What's happening to wetpixel.com

If Pete could drum up a couple of moderators to run it, a forum section that everyone could read but must be applied to for post privileges would meet the need pretty well. Applicants could be required to provide evidence of an empty bank account and back problems from carrying all that...

    What's happening to wetpixel.com

slurp down a copy and send it to archive.org. Making a permanent record of websites is the primary mission of the internet archive - although their usual mechanism for recording the content won't work since it's members only. I use this tool: Download HTTrack Website Copier 3.49-2 - HTTrack...

    Do rotating turrets really matter?

If only more than one regulator were being manufactured, we'd live in a perfect world.

    Apple Watch Ultra 2

That's explicitly illegal to do in the United States. See: Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act - Wikipedia FTC's statement regarding section 108 of the act:

    Apple Watch Ultra 2

Interesting. They haven't added any tools/fixtures/parts to their self-service repair store for any of their watch products. Maybe they will in the future. It looks like the waterproofing is achieved with a silicone gasket on the back and adhesive tape on the front under the screen. If...

    Apple Watch Ultra 2

I'm not an Apple fan, but I feel they deserve credit for admitting it. Of course, it's not permanent. It probably depends on a rubber o-ring or gasket. The products aren't intended to be serviced (which is a separate problem), so eventually, the thing won't be water resistant anymore as that...

    Apple Watch Ultra 2

The Apple Watch series two ultra won't have AI. I can say this with certainty because when a product with a radio is to be made available for sale in the US, it must be tested by a government agency called the FCC. All technical details regarding communication are publicly available here for...

First of the month! TEST YOUR CARBON MONOXIDE AND SMOKE ALARMS.

Thanks for the reminder! My family hates me now ;). Next time we'll have a 3am drill, and they'll be begging me to do it in the middle of the day from then on.

Big feet and off the shelf drysuits

I don't know anything about seaskin, but I love my Bare HDC Tech drysuit. Everything other than the price tag is just great. The difference in custom fit vs standard size was not much, as I recall. I did have a busted zipper the first year I owned it, but they replaced it under warranty.

Struggling to find a wetsuit for a 6'6 Man 220 lbs. Tried Multiple Vendors

I think Bare does custom-fit wetsuits, although I've only bought one of their drysuits. Also, wetwear only does custom suits. You shouldn't believe Wetwear's claims about their special neoprene being warmer - it's about the same as any other neoprene of the same thickness, in my experience...

"Right to Repair" - Potentially great news for DIY!

The farmers did it to themselves. They want a law just for them. I think they didn't believe the current raft of laws being enacted across the country would happen or some such.

"Right to Repair" - Potentially great news for DIY!

It means you could do that for Scubapro computers and lights (collectively electronics). That being said, I would expect the first time most companies encounter this, they'll ignore it until some agency or lawyer forces the issue. The limitation in the wording is related to farming and...

Shearwater and the Poseidon Solid State Sensor

7 years after release and the sensor is still $1,400.00. I can't find any aftermarket solid state sensors. Sometimes patents encourage innovation, other times they stifle it.

What would you want in a $2500 regulator?

Supercapacitor instead of a battery. That would make it less failure-prone, and less dangerous in the event of a failure resulting in water intrusion.l
