    Thirteen Lives

I can't imagine a situation where an elite dive team wouldn't be rather unwelcoming to a bunch of outsiders who upstage them. Pride is a common flaw among those (including myself) who are high achievers. Rivalry is human and the 'drama' made the characters more believable. I haven't read or...

Have you been denied a dive because of the lack of paper dive log (w/ signature)?

No one has ever wanted to see my log book for any reason.

Shallow fresh water test of Akaso EK7000 ($75 GoPro knockoff)

at that depth, I'd be surprised if any filter is really necessary.

    Yelled at for MOF

my only desire to continue to put my MOF is to piss people off. I get so irritated with the whole "panicked diver" crowd. I was putting my mask up on my forehead long before I started diving and never had any issues. Due to "social pressure" I yank it down over my neck but it's a PITA to get it...

Fills dry or in water bath?

The most reputable dive shop I've ever visited (and now frequent) does wet (water bath) fills. I can imagine water getting in the cylinder if it's done carelessly, but I don't see anything inherently wrong with cooling the tank while filling. The compressed air is bone dry so claims of...

Shallow fresh water test of Akaso EK7000 ($75 GoPro knockoff)

Every time I white balance footage, I don't like the results. When I have the tools to fine tune things on a photo, it turns out great. But in video, I hate the results. Maybe I just need an object that I know is white rather than picking a spot I think is white.

Shallow fresh water test of Akaso EK7000 ($75 GoPro knockoff)

I use Corel Video Studio but I hardly recommend it. It's just what I've used for 15 years so I'm used to it, bugs and all.

Shallow fresh water test of Akaso EK7000 ($75 GoPro knockoff)

yes. I didn't feel the need to slow down much footage, but I wanted to have the option to slow to 30 fps if need be hence the choice of higher frame rate. Not to mention, my computer gets bogged down by 4K so it's almost unusable for me.

Shallow fresh water test of Akaso EK7000 ($75 GoPro knockoff)

AKASO has released a set of "compatible" filters. http://a.co/6r2EXwz I say "compatible" because they don't fit. They're trying to correct the problem ever since I left a bad review, but as yet they still don't fit. But if you're willing to take a sander or blade to the lens to downsize it, the...

    FAI (femoroacetabular impingement) surgery

Hi all, I'm a 31 year old male. I developed a labral tear due to femoroacetabular impingement in my left hip in 2015. In my case, it's due to an improperly shaped ball joint combined with weight training. After conservative treatment (physical therapy and strengthening exercises) from a couple...

    Scubaboard lifting leaderboard

Nothing to brag about. Deadlift: 365 lb (1RM), 5x325 lb Bench: 5x185 lb Squat: 5x190 lb Overhead Press: 5x115lb, 3x125 lb, 1x135 lb I was really into lifting from 2012-2014. I developed hip FAI (femoroacetabular impingement) in 2015 which hasn't resolved and has seriously limited strength...

Etiquette on carrying a knife during dives

it's possible to insult the intelligence of students. Student is a rather broad term and can refer to those attending anything from primary school to grad school. You can speak simply to those of lower education without sounding like an idiot yourself. It's done daily by good educators and...

Safety stop - loosing my buoyancy

Generally speaking the first dive in a trip, or after a long absence, or at the beginning of a dive season, should probably be kept pretty easy. I like to start on a shallow, non-challenging dive. Not only does this give me an opportunity to do a weight/equipment check before more challenging...

    Donation of primary or secondary?

will keep that in mind next time I'm using rentals! :D At some point I learned (don't remember where, but not during any certification course) that an OOA diver is liable to be panicky, or at very least, desperate for air. The OOA procedure is usually shortened to: 1.) OOA diver grabs a...

    Donation of primary or secondary?

Without fail, my wife's octo unclips and sails behind her. It doesn't matter how well we clip it off. Short of shoving it in a pocket, it's GOING to drag. I have better luck (when renting regs), perhaps because I regularly check and reclip equipment during a dive. Regardless, I've already...

Diving on a budget - your tips?

Not sure I can be very helpful. DC is very different from MN. But I'll share with you what I do to do more diving on fewer dollars. I find diving trips to far away places always end up costing a lot (thousands). So these happen every few years depending on finances. I dive locally a lot. Sure...

    Are Suunto Zoops super conservative?

That's exactly what I was looking for! I just assumed there was still a large degree of uncertainty in modeling decompression, thus the various algorithms still in use by computer manufacturers. I had always assumed Buhlmann was "old" and thus did not reflect the best of decompression theory. To...

    Are Suunto Zoops super conservative?

nope. Maybe it's discussed elsewhere and I've just missed it, but it'd fit nicely into this thread. I assume tech divers use Buhlmann but I base that assumption on nothing more than the algorithm used by Shearwater computers. Is that the way things are moving?

    Are Suunto Zoops super conservative?

for the ignorant among us, what algorithm seems to be "best" at this point?
