    Shark Bite risk

I feel like we're not paying enough attention to the real statistic here - just the sheer massive number of sharks that we kill. I still can't understand why the conversation always revolves around possible shark bites when the reality is that we are far, far, far more bloodthirsty killers than...

    Choking underwater

The most common reaction of the body is try and cough up the irritant. You can't 'swallow' it as the problem is that it it going down the trachea and not the esophagus. It's this coughing that often causes the spasms (think of it as closing to prevent more irritants in). Swallowing water def...

Another noob you betchya from Minnesota!

Hiya Trance, I didn't buy my gear till 40 dives in but I STILL wore all of it (minus the fins, at least) and pranced around at home as soon as I got it - couldn't wait to get it wet! I didn't really appreciate how much fun gear could be until later on :) Welcome to diving. I'm still new at 90...

If you can't breathe, it's too tight.

Sola 1200 Photo light to get me started instead of Strobe?

Thanks again, Sevenrider! I think I'll start off with a strobe and lens and then add the Sola 1200 Photo when I can. Before the Sony RX100/Nauticam, I was using the Canon s90 until I flooded it. I don't think I'd have the guts to use a dSLR underwater just in case of a flood. Good idea on the...

Sola 1200 Photo light to get me started instead of Strobe?

Thanks, Sevenrider! Very cool shot. I think I'm convinced on the strobe over the video light now. Do you feel that a focus light is also important? I'm actually a bit hazy on how the focus light helps a strobe. Also, I feel like I need to check out Subic Bay! I live in Manila and always dive...

Sola 1200 Photo light to get me started instead of Strobe?

Thanks, all! Beginning to feel like I should get a strobe instead - I like video but prefer stills. drbill...it's great weather for diving now...where are you planning to visit?

    Alternative to Atlantis Dumaguete?

I like Easy Diving dive shop at Thalatta resort. Resort is good too, with saltwater pool. Food is better than the average.

    Puerto Galera vs. Anilao

Agree with previous divers. I live in Manila and dive Anilaos 1-3 times a month. Diving is definitely superior in Anilaos over Puerta Galera. I also find it cheaper. However, Anilaos doesn't have any restaurants or bars etc...you just hang out in the resort (and dload pics or plan night dives -...

    Survey for Dissertation

I see you posted it - done. Did wonder though...very few doctors are trained in scuba conditions. Were a regular doctor to warn me off, I would be unlikely to comply because I'd feel it wasn't based on a sufficient evidence base. If it WAS based on sufficient evidence, that would be another...

    Dive #200 completed yesterday

Thank you for sharing! I'm looking forward to my 100th coming up very soon but have been feeling daunted by all the 1000-3000+ dive members on this board :) So it felt good to read your post! I shall look forward to my 100th :)

Sola 1200 Photo light to get me started instead of Strobe?

Hi all, I recently upgraded to a Sony RX100 in the Nauticam. I was using my UK Light Canon torch to provide lighting but that is getting tiring. A friend is using the same rig and a video light with it, no strobe. I was thinking of getting a macro lens (specifically the SubSee +10 diopter) along...

    Torch compared with strobe

Of course strobes are better but until I can afford them (and honestly, until I feel my photography skills warrant them), am using my UK Light Canon torch. No mount, just torch in left hand. I'm primarily interested in macro - working okay for now. Definitely makes you up your buoyancy skills...

Taking care of my Sony RX100 Nauticam housing

I had a faulty camera for 4 years and didn't know? I feel a little stupid now. But happy now, so all's good in stupidville :)

Taking care of my Sony RX100 Nauticam housing

Really? That's interesting - for underwater, I could never get my s90 (for four years!) to perform the way the rx100 has on it's first few dives out (my photography skills have not improved in the meanwhile :) ). On the other hand, I know the s100 is much better than the s90 so perhaps the s95...

Sorry, using Firefox and also tried with Safari. No luck. And, ironically enough, when I click on the link you shared, I get the same 'missing plug-in' message.

Taking care of my Sony RX100 Nauticam housing

Thanks, Ivakdiver. Yes, the advantage of living in the Philippines is that you can make a quick day trip down to some fantastic sites to check out new gear :) On the camera, no, no macro lens, no strobe. Just the camera itself, the Nauticam housing and my UK Light Canon for extra lighting...
