Women and everything being heavy in scuba diving

How do I deal with heavy weights? I lift with my legs. I lift heavier at the gym than I've ever had to lift diving.

    My Discover Scuba Diving Experience

The only DSD experience I've had was with my youngest son. He was 11-years-old and we were in the Mayan Riviera. He and his brother had already done a PADI Seals course a few years before so he wasn't new to the mechanics of diving. The ocean portion was just him, his instructor, my husband...

    Consuming fish

Neither my husband nor I will eat grouper - they're like cute pets. Pretty much anything else that isn't endangered or high in toxins is fine with us.

What hardest thing to overcome as a new diver?

I'm going to agree with 'breathing through the mouth'. I swear, my first few dives I had a constant soundtrack in my head of 'You're okay, you're getting enough air, you're okay'.

First ocean open water, so disappointed

If it makes you feel any better, I had a panic attack during one of my OW training dives. Same kind of situation - not used to the suit, feeling claustrophobic. I was really nervous about my first post-cert. dives but I did them in tropical, calm conditions and I've never looked back. I've...

Ever had to use Rescue training?

I would argue that I use it every time I dive.

How many times a year you are going to scuba diving?

I live in a cold climate and I don't cold water dive. Call me a wimp, I can take it. :D We typically take two dive trips a year diving anywhere from 10-25 times each trip.

Bad air originating in tank and not compressor

I can't tell you how glad I am that he tested it. I'm also glad that the one person with a CO tester was given the only contaminated tank. If it had been given to anyone else, things might have ended differently.

    Right Place at Right Time

At 12, children can get their JAOW through PADI. My son is taking the course now.

    Dive Buddy

I have a 12 and 14 year old going for their first pool dives this evening. I understand your apprehension - it's your kid so the sense of responsibility for their well-being is that much more. My suggestion is to just take it slowly until you both become more comfortable with your abilities...

    Diving In St. Lucia

We did our very first post-cert dives with Scuba Saint Lucia. As far as difficulty - the dives we took were fairly easy.

    Bullied under water

Only his behaviour as it affects her. It's always worth a shot. I don't think it's unreasonable to have a chat with the @$$ and see where it goes. If it doesn't change his behaviour then find a new group, but retreat doesn't tend to be my opening move.

    Bullied under water

This is my thoughtful, helpful, female response. ;) Don't run away, don't be passive agressive, don't rely on your husband to come to your rescue, and don't stab him (although the urge is sometimes undeniable). Sit him down, look him in the eye and say, "Look, if you've got a problem with the...

Maybe white-tip reef sharks control lionfish in the Indo-pacific?

The last time I was in Belize, I was surprised how aggressive the moray eels were to divers. Feeding lionfish to the sea life teaches the sea life that divers are a source of food.

    What have you seen?

A finned grey reef shark. He had a hook and leader hanging from his mouth and he was missing his dorsal fin. It didn't seem to slow him down but I was very careful not to get in his way just in case he held a grudge.

    Diva Cup or other recommendation...

Diva Cup. I was worried the first time I used it since it's not like you can pressurize it like you can your mask. :D But I've used it up to 130 ft with no issues.

Recommendations for diving with new Jr. OW diver

Take him for a pool dive so you can check out his buoyancy and he can practice his basic skills in a safe environment.
