Water temp off the North Carolina coast and what do you wear?

Thanks everyone! It looks like I may need to buy a new wetsuit then. All I have is the 7mil and the rashguard. It was fine for San Diego diving... and the rashguard was fine for any tropical diving. I'll have to keep an eye out for sales and such.

Water temp off the North Carolina coast and what do you wear?

Most of my diving has been colder water (San Diego and North East US) but I am going to North Carolina in a month (mid August) on a dive trip to U-352 (and/or some other wrecks--depending). I only have a 7mil wetsuit at this point and a rash guard that I sometimes wear under the wetsuit. In...

    "Helpful" male dive buddies

I wish I had this problem. Where I've been diving lately, no one seems to check anyone else's gear (and half dive solo). I don't like that at all. But, if the OP doesn't like it then she doesn't like it. We are all different after all. I would just say, "My husband already checked my gear...

Swimming to stay in shape for diving-- best types of strokes?

Thanks! You know, I have that issue of Alert Diver too (guess I need to read it). I tend to breathe though my nose when swimming (I don't bother to lift my mouth out of the water). Even underwater I twist around, breath out though my nose, and then go to the surface belly up so only my nose is...

Swimming to stay in shape for diving-- best types of strokes?

That's interesting that you say that (about breathing though the mouth). I tend to breath though both my mouth and nose when I swim... but I only breathe though my nose doing the side stroke because my mouth is always half underwater. Gives me something to think about. Thanks! I've never really...

Swimming to stay in shape for diving-- best types of strokes?

I love swimming and now that it's pool season again where I live, I am back in the water swimming laps. I was wondering if anyone knows of any particular stroke that's best for also staying in shape for diving? I tend to do the side stroke the most because I am able to do it for up to an hour...

Difficult to find a buddy as a female?

I hope not! Although I am glad someone brought this thread back up because I am facing a similar problem and I would like to read some more ideas and suggestions. I found a couple of potential buddies online--but nothing solid. Mostly what I've been finding is men who aren't certified asking...

Where to carry a finger reel

Awesome... thank you all so much. The pictures really help too. I did exactly that and I've been trying my best to make it unravel with no luck (which is a good thing). But at the same time it seems easy enough to use.

Where to carry a finger reel

I had to buy a a wreck reel for diving off a certain boat and was told a finger reel would suffice. Looking at it on dry land it's okay; but I can't think of a way to hook it onto a D ring without it potentially unraveling underwater. With my old BC, I would just put it in my pocket most likely...

When did you feel comfortable diving?

I was comfortable right off the bat too. Of course, I always loved water, swimming, being in the ocean, etc. I was a lifeguard in my teen years too. So I had a head start. It gets easier and more relaxing for most people over time. Like another poster said, don't worry about it. Hey, improving...

Scuba listed as one of the 5 most expensive hobbies

Well, they are right in that it's expensive--but their facts are off and they make some gross generalizations. I just plopped down about $2000 in new gear over the last month (I took an intro to tech course and am converting everything over). I pretty much just have my BC replaced with a...

    Underwater Sounds

LOL, your buddy is braver than I would be! Nah, I hammed it up and waved at them :p

    Underwater Sounds

The main reason I think I would want to take a re-breather class is so I can hear more underwater. The strangest thing I've hear underwater was a pulsating humming noise when I was diving a reef in Guam. I couldn't figure it out. My buddy didn't hear it, but I did. I looked for a boat because...

What's on your diving bucket list?

Good thread idea! The top thing on my bucket list is Chuuk Lagoon! But here is my list Chuuk Hawaii A U-boat... any U-boat (I have this already scheduled and paid for--U-352, so it's coming soon) See Whale Sharks Dive a Great Lakes Wreck Texas Clipper Andrea Doria There are a lot of places I...

Does it bother LDS owners when...

For what it's worth, everything I've tried to buy (big ticket item) at the various LDSs in my area--they didn't carry. I can't even get a simple pair of neoprene gloves in my size--they have to be ordered since the smallest I can find seem to be large. I tried to buy a parka here and all they...

How to "buddy-up" on a dive boat?

This is one of my big concerns too. I already booked two dives on a local dive boat and I have no buddies. On top of that, I am not used to diving on the East Coast (I have most of my diving experience in Southern California). I've been told that divers out here have a different "dive culture."...

    Dental crowns and implants

When I had my root canal that lead to the crown I mentioned, I didn't realize you weren't supposed to feel anything. People talk about how horrible root canals are that I assumed pain during the procedure was just one of those things. I'd guess about a third of the way into the procedure it...

    Dental crowns and implants

I have a crown on one tooth (for 13 years now) and it's never given me a problem (with the permanent crown). The temporary crown I had (while waiting for the permanent one) did though. But it wasn't that bad at all. It came loose on my ascent so tucked it away in my mouth in that nice space...

    PADI vs NAUI

Well, it's good that the agencies survey. They can maintain quality and check on what students are learning to make sure minimum standards are met. The reason I brought it up is because there was the question brought up if any agencies even follow up with students and their training--that is why...

    PADI vs NAUI

That's good to hear. I think it's good that the agencies do that. I just couldn't speak for PADI courses since all my classes were all NAUI with one TDI class mixed in there. I keep going back to the same two instructors that I met teaching though a Navy base (who happen to be NAUI instructors)...
