I'd recommend doing this in the other order though. (Is there a car ferry from Cancun?) The taxi union seems like a pretty big pain on the island; but I wouldn't drive there, so it's the option I have.

Did the DM/Captain brief you that the current would be crazy, or were they caught off guard by it too? I thought the DMs could usually tell when the currents are going to be insane (and thus, choose to go elsewhere.)

I've both done diving vacations and cruise vacations to Cozumel. First, Cozumel is one of the easiest ports for cruisers. I think your family could easily eat breakfast on the ship (so can you), get a taxi to a beach club, and get a taxi to walk around town and/or return directly to the pier...

I hope you can find some moments of peace today. It's no doubt it will be a hard day. 4 months is a short time. I think those moments of disbelief will likely always be with you. They will hopefully just lessen over time so that they are not debilitating.
