    Southern Maldives 2017

And the sharks, not in the movie. But we did a dive at one of the channels and about 100 sharks came swimming by. Black tips, White tips and Tigers. Then they turned around and did it again. Sadly the camera had an issue during that dive. I had forgotten to attach the cable between the battery...

    Southern Maldives 2017

This Feb we went to the Maldives, the Addu atol which is south of the equator. Just nine divers on the ship. It was very good diving. Relaxed crew, good food. The only nasty bit is that the plane from Abu Dhabi arrived at 10 am and the local plane flew on at 8 pm so that was a lost day.

    Requirement to do night dives

Nikole: Finding out what light to use is not that hard. There are lots of lights that will do and the back up light is not very difficult to. Your tank does not need a light and your flat only when a boat has to pick you up. Night diving is no rocket science. As we dive in murky waters, we...

Drysuit in Red Sea in February

No, first do a thorough check before going in. Be sure your valve is open. Not nice to say the least to jump in and swim down to find there's no air coming from your reg while being negatively bouyant. Be sure everything is secured as there is no time for adjustments on the surface. Get as much...

Drysuit in Red Sea in February

@Canard: It is a good plan to bring a dry suit, under water it is nice, but getting out of the water and in between dives you"ll be happier because the wind will be very chilly. WhileI hope Im wrong the chances of seeing sharks in "winter"is somewhat slimmer than in the warmer times of the year...

    What's in a (user) Name?

Sphyrnidae is the family of the hammerheads, so as `i'm only one I made it sphyrnidus. So what's whit the hammerheads? My Father in Law was my instructor back in 1968. When I was certified, we went diving and spearfishing together on Curacao where we lived at that time. At Playa Kalki he speared...

    Are dry suits worth it?

Here in the northern parts of Europe diving wet is no fun between Octobre and May. Especially when boat diving on a windy day at sea, you get to cold. I have a Bare, trilam. Bought in 2009 for €1100 including hood and gloves. I had one leak, probably from an oyster while photographing. No...

    TSandM -- Lynne Flaherty

I've been reading this and feel so sad for her/her partner and of course the people who met her. Though I never met her, living on another continent, she was always part of discussions and was always able to say things so elaborately. I'm at a loss for words. My heart felt condolences for Peter.

    Opinions on used gear

I do not know about prices in the USA, but I looked it up, in the Netherlands you get this MK25/A700 for $594. It all depends on how many dives have been made with it. If it's almost new and used little it sounds as a good price if it is so expensive out there. But it is a tech reg, top of the...

    Opinions on used gear

Second hand dry suits also have the problem that if the boots are attached, they have to be the right size. It's annoying when someone tell's you they're fine and then while fitting the shoes are too small. It happened to me, I drove 40 miles for nothing...

    Opinions on used gear

Used gear is most often fine. A lot of people buy a lot of stuff new in their enthusiasm while after a 20-50 dives they call it quits. I buy a lot of stuff used too, but regs are regs are always a bit of a problem as you'd most probably want to have it serviced. So that makes it hardly worth it...

Critters in the Netherlands, short video

https://youtu.be/0M9I1-X-VFY For reasons I can't figure out, the embedding doesn't work, for me, but here is another short movie. Filmed with the Canon HF G10 in L&M Bluefin and two RGBlue lights. The location is the Oosterscheld in the Netherlands. Depth 1-12 meters, dive time 2x 70 minutes

    Why diving in Israel

And sorry to say, watching the movie Roman, it's not an advertisement for me to go there as I see mainly sand and dead coral...

    Why diving in Israel

Thank you for your post Nasser. I know most people do shore diving and day boats. We used to do that too. But we're kind of lazy and love liveaboards, also it gets you to better spots, or you are at spots at another time than the day boats arrive :) On the dangers of travelling: it is always...

    Why diving in Israel

@Roman You mention the Egyptian law. CDWS is the appointed organisation that makes the rules for diving. Not a law. Here is their statement on diving with guides: http://projectoceanvision.com/articles/red_sea_rules/ratios.pdf Maybe I'm missing something here, but it doesn't say a guide is...

    Why diving in Israel

Hi Gilad, thanks for your article, but.... http://[URL"""]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_attacks_on_Eilat_and_Aqaba and there hasn't been an [URL="http://fas.org/irp/threat/terror_94/append.html"]attack on Hurghada since 1994 I have been diving in the Red Sea for quite some years...

Critters in the Netherlands, short video

https://youtu.be/vKXvpcXXqNM As I did a lot of other things this year, so I haven't been filming a lot. But this weekend we did a nice long dive: max depth 10 m, dive time 69 min. If the player doesn't work, here is the link: https://youtu.be/vKXvpcXXqNM

Buy my own reg or keep renting?

The first stage is to be protected from getting water in to it. That is basically only when rinsing it, because when it's attached to the tank water can't enter. The second stage is always in the water and doesn't need special care/protection. With all your gear, the way to keep it alive for a...

Buy my own reg or keep renting?

My former reg costed €400 or $500 and lasted approximately 800 dives So that is 60 ct per dive. The next I paid € 500 for and is now in use for 300 dives. They get service every other year, costing about 100. I do not service them myself as that would be the end of them :) So renting...
