New Divers heading to Philippines in November

What's your certification level and how long would you be staying? Puerto Galera has pretty good diving at OW depth. There are a number of shipwrecks in Sabang bay right at 18 meters and a lot of good reef in the area. Enough fun stuff to do when not diving as well. I liked diving in Cebu but...

Best place to dive near Manila- April 3-6???

You take the bus or a taxi to Batangas Pier and then a ferry to Sabang, White Beach, or PG town proper. You could charter a private boat but it would be pretty expensive. They're not the massive ferries like the ones that go to Cebu, they're wooden things with a few rows of benches and hold...

Best place to dive near Manila- April 3-6???

Agree with going to Puerto Galera instead. They don't stack the charges up. I go to Octopus Diver, a small shop on Sabang Beach and it's 1200 for an individual dive, or 2600 pesos for 3 dives. That includes all equipment you need and a boat ride to the dive site. If no one else is diving that...

    Eating Out around Sabang?

You can eat for cheaper on your own. I believe the 3 course lunch at Papa Fred's Steakhouse is about 300 pesos. Good food too.

    Recommendations for Puerto Galera?

I really can't say I've found any benefit in resorts in PG. There really aren't any on White Beach and it seems in Sabang 'resort' just means 'we have rooms and a dive shop.' You find a room for $20-$30 per night. Your dives are going to be about $25 each unless you get a package from a dive...

    Recommendations for Puerto Galera?

Ah, PG. My area of expertise. This is my constant weekend home and I've been making sometimes as many as 3 trips per month for the last year and a half. Non diving stuff first - I've never stayed in Sabang at night. Never appealed to me. From the bay it looks big but when you get there you...

First trip to Philipines -liveaboard and land based advice please

I highly recommend Puerto Galera. If nothing else a few dives before heading back to Manila. There is great reef around Sabang and a few nice ship wrecks in Sabang Bay. I've seen loads of turtles out there, nudibranch heaven, giant puffers, loads of frog fish, eels, cuttlefish and the occasional...

Beneath The Galleon - Puerto Galera, Philippines

Hole in the wall is one of my favorites. As is Monkey Beach. Alma Jane another fun one, the frog fish are always there hanging out, as are the bat fish, and the last two times I was there a banded sea snake was hanging around. Great report.

    Boracay diving

To be brutally honest, Boracay is the least exciting diving I've done here. Great visibility, great, but there's just not a whole lot to see down there. Some coral, some fish. That's all I really remember. You'd be much better off taking a side trip from Manila to Anilao or Puerto Galera...

    Resort owner shot and killed

I suppose safety is never ensured but I can tell you I would not hesitate to go today and ~3 weeks ago when I was last there it was business as usual. I tend to use public transportation the whole way, bus, jeepney, tricycle, but private is always faster and more comfortable.

    Resort owner shot and killed

In Anilao? I can! Shore dive = around 900P. Bangka = 1500 to 2000 alone, without gear, depending on where you go and who you get.

    More than macro at Anilao?

    Those are outstanding, MaxBottomTime.

    How good is Verde Island...?

There are a number of shipping lines that all leave at different times. There's Father and Sons, Minolo shipping, Blue Penguin, and one or two more I can't recall right now. There's one leaving about every half hour of every day, but pretty much none leave at their advertised time. Expect a 30+...

    Resort owner shot and killed

Woah, I didn't know this. I was at Anilao Beach Club 3 weeks ago diving. Must have been right around the same day this happened.

Let's get to know the Philippine paradise divers

Hello! New poster here. I'm an American, I've been living in Manila for about 16 months. I started diving here in the Philippines. So far I've done Anilao a number of times, most of my dives in Puerto Galera, as well as Boracay, Cebu, Palawan. Currently AOW and looking at rescue or some kind...

    How good is Verde Island...?

Depends on what you consider convenient. Dive Anilao, take a tricycle to Batangas Pier, take the ferry to Muelle or Sabang or White Beach (wherever you're staying) then dive there. Travel time probably ~2-3 hours, depending on when the ferry leaves. White Beach at night is interesting, on the...

    More than macro at Anilao?

There are some great dive sites around Anilao. Scuba Bro and Anilao Beach Club both have 'meh' house reefs but the night diving is excellent. Loads of cuttle fish, puffers, squid, crab, etc. I think my favorite dive site I've done there is Dive and Trek, it's about 10 minutes from Anilao Beach...
