    Top 5 Warm-Water Sidemount Fins

Also have you tested the Hollis F1 LT fins? I loved my old F1s but gave them up because of their detrimental effect on my trim. Would love to have that F1 power back for long surface swims, but in a neutrally buoyant version.

    Top 5 Warm-Water Sidemount Fins

Not just for warm water! I use neutral fins in all conditions, wetsuit or drysuit. My legs tend to sink, so neutral fins were the critical piece in solving the puzzle of my own trim. :) Thanks for the roundup, I always try to stay aware of all the good neutral fin options.

    Sundiver Woes Continue

The whole thing is just sad for everyone. The loss of Laurel Silver-Valker is tragic. Captain Kyaa giving up her license is sad, but at least she is accepting responsibility and not fighting it. I like Captain Kyaa and think she works very hard to give divers a great experience aboard her...

Concerned with questions @ VIP Certification... Experts please

Inspector numbers, inspector certification and/or supervision by a certified inspector are NOT required for visuals, only hydros. The DOT standards for visual inspections are pretty lax, as others have pointed out. They pass the buck to the Compressed Gas Association C-6.x pamphlets on all the...

Where to get setup with a BP/W in San Diego area?

Also Beach Cities Scuba up in Dana Point. I think a good bit of HoS tech gear is special order.

Any negative experience with UTD Z-system harness+BC (no manifold!) ?

The Z system's wing is very secure on the harness. The main reason is that the vertical back strap of the harness is actually threaded through a sleeve on the inside of the wing. So the wing is attached top (3" webbing), left (3" elastic), right (3" elastic) as well as in the strip down the...

    Boat Entry Question

Conception captain & crew had no problem at all with my sidemount. Of course I try to make a point of being low maintenance on dive boats. Like @NWGratefulDiver Bob, I opted to just keep everything clipped up the ladder and back to my seat, rather than remove & clip off in the water. Less extra...

    Boat Entry Question

Nope. Did a giant stride off the bow of Conception last spring with 2x AL80s. No prob.

Need a good LDS or instructor in San Diego

We typically address this in class. Most of our students leave OW with the adaptability to handle any type of gear. If there are any concerns, we can always arrange extra pool time to train in typical rental gear (i.e. jacket BC, octopus, etc.) This process is much easier than re-training...

Need a good LDS or instructor in San Diego

Yes Robert is great too but he's a few hours north of SD

Need a good LDS or instructor in San Diego

I think UTD has the best instructors and curriculum around, but then again I'm biased because I teach for them myself. Focus is on perfect trim and buoyancy, right from the start. Home · UTD Scuba Diving

Diving using min-deco - questions about depth averaging, repetitive dives

If you are diving a relatively square profile (say up/down an anchor line) then you can exclude descent from the average depth. If you are following bottom contours down on a longer descent, you can average that in. In practice, either way should not change your depth average much, since your...

Who hates their White Fusion Dry Suit?

The longer I own my Fusion Tech (~70 dives), the more I like it. Donning is less and less struggle with practice. I've come to appreciate the zipper design, which is symmetrical and comfortable to wear unzipped between dives, yet also enables self-zipping. A month ago I demoed a DUI suit and...

Should I continue down the DIR path?

All of the DIR drills are really just exercises in buoyancy, trim and positioning. Which are the three core skills that will make your everyday diving more enjoyable, every time, with any team.

Should I continue down the DIR path?

I really think you can't go wrong with further Essentials/Fundies type of training. It will improve your basic skills, buoyancy, trim and comfort in the water, which translates into more enjoyable diving, whatever your goals are. The reason UTD and GUE have recreational training paths is that...

How many actually use diver buoy or surface marker buoy?

Used my SMB just last Saturday. I always carry the SMB, spool and double ender in my right thigh pocket, but haven't needed it much in the past few months except on training dives. On this particular dive, our boat had popped its stern anchor and swung around when the wind suddenly shifted. So...

    Heaviest backplate

Your best strategy is to buy two identical 6lb/3kg stainless backplates and just bolt them together. Way more affordable than a 6mm plate. I've never seen it done, but maybe you could even manage this with 3 of them... now THAT's a plate.

    Safety Tips for Vintage Diving?

Boat full of divers in 70s and 80s era gear. Lots of Dacor 950 and 960 regs, not sure model/make of the really old double hose reg. Horse collars, plastic backpacks and neoprene dry suits. We all were taught to buddy breathe, don't need no stinking octopus. Everyone survived and had a great time.
