Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

@uspap That's a flatworm - Eurylepta californica. I've seen them a few times at Breakwater but not often. Good find!

@MaxBottomtime - good to have met you too. Sorry the vis turned on you, hopefully you still managed to snap a few nice pics. @macado - thanks, O. muricata looks like a promising candidate. I'll check my books again later...

    Nudibranch Lovers

Had a great time last week up in God's Pocket, BC. Many nudibranch sightings, so here's a few of the best: Melibe leonina (Hooded nudibranch). Flabellina trophina Tochuina tetraquetra (Orange peel nudibranch) Dirona albolineata (White-lined dirona). Dendronotus rufus (Red dendronotid)...

@ macado - that first picture is fantastic, I love the detail inside the cerata. Do you know the species? Some type of Flabellina?

Saw my first sea spider (pycnogonid)

On a dive in Komodo earlier this month. Only about the size of my thumbnail, but one of my favorite critters from the whole trip (thanks to my guide for spotting it!). Only got one in-focus shot before it crawled around a corner and out of sight. Fascinating creatures. They're supposedly quite...

    Nudibranch Lovers

Here's a few from Komodo earlier this month. Sorry, no IDs for most, because I was too tired to work my way through the thousands of them in the book :-) This one's a headshield slug. Nice shark-fin shape to the headshield. Spanish dancer. This was big, easily 8 inches long when it...

Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

Had a great day in Monterey on Saturday: Aquarium reef and MacAbee pinnacle on the Beachhopper in the morning. Sea was fairly calm, 53-54F at the bottom, 58 nearer the surface (warm!). Vis was at least 25 feet once you got below about 15fsw. Saw huge, huge schools of sardines/anchovies...

Another fine day in Monterey: Hermissenda opalescens I saw a few individuals climbing things like this, and there were egg masses on a few of those stony tubes (I can't remember what kind of worm-like critter lives in those). But I haven't found any reference to them laying eggs like this...

    Big Disappointment at Big Sur

I had a similar experience last year, although it sounds like you had much rougher conditions. I think I did 3 dives in total. On the second day, the swim step was a serious danger. The captain said that's all the diving for the day and let us decide if we wanted to cruise around and hope for...

I was attacked by a GW shark

A video has surfaced of this encounter. Some quite impressive shark/kayak action at about 1:00 and the kayaker is picked up by the boat at around 4:00. Couple Films Kayaker Being Attacked By A Shark In Monterey Bay, California

I found several Aegires albopunctatus (salt and pepper nudibranch) on the pipe leading to the metridium fields in Monterey. I've not seen them in Monterey before - don't know if I wasn't looking hard enough (although they stood out quite clearly), or if they are seasonal, or shy, or something...

Key Largo - Looking for Seasoned diver thoughts

Just want to thank everyone - I've been wanting to visit Key Largo for a while, and this thread came along at just the right time. I just booked for 5 days with Rainbow Reef/Key West Inn at the end of the month. Looking forward to some warm water and vis of more than 10 feet :-)

Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

Point Lobos this morning had a fairly big swell, but it looked OK. We dropped into about 30 feet depth with 1-2 foot vis. Took a few minutes to find each other, re-orientate, and confirm we really wanted to do this. Glad we did, because it got better. Made it out to lone metridium which was...

    Canon G7X vs. Olympus TG-4

I use the G7X with Fantasea housing and I'm very happy with both (I have no experience with the Olympus, I'm just giving my 2 cents on the Canon). I don't use the one button white balance - when I bought it, I thought I would, but I do it in Lightroom. You need an adaptor with that housing to...

Yeah, I know - I'm a scientist while above sea level :). But I liked the popular name. I just read the publication describing A. loui and it's very interesting. The degree of overlap between A. loui and A. papillosa isn't clear yet. A. loui is currently only known to be on the CA coast plus a...

Thanks. I guess I'll give up trying to remember latin names. According to one of my books, A. ex-papillosa goes by the popular name "Shaggy mouse nudibranch" which just seems right to me. So I'm gonna call it that.

    Nudibranch Lovers

Here's one from Monterey, CA last weekend. Papillose aeolid (Aeolidia papillosa) was my initial ID, but I'm not so sure now. It was laying eggs on the underside of a leaf of red seaweed. Another shot: Maybe not the prettiest nudibranch out there, but I've never seen it before and it got me...
