    Question SCUBA, the self-policing industry

If you don't like rules and fun police, come to NZ. Up until Christchurch (one of our very few mass shooting), even our gun laws were extremely lax (not compared to the USA, but the USA is an extreme outlier in this respect). Even where there are laws, enforcement is a huge issue in a country...

    Why do divers eat seafood?

It's a tradition on our boat that everyone has a raw scallop after the dive. I like them raw, but like oysters, you can have too much of a good thing.

    Why do divers eat seafood?

Depends on the fish species here. Kingfish (yellowtail amberjack) will often actively investigate SCUBA divers, so would make an easy target. Snapper (silver sea bream, a type of porgy) are very shy and SCUBA would be disadvantaged compared to freedivers. I don't have strong opinions, do what...

    Why do divers eat seafood?

If people are trying to catch their dinner, I don't think "fair" comes in to it. It's food harvest like going to the supermarket. I wouldn't consider it sporting, but I suspect people who spear on SCUBA don't either. Where I live, it's perfectly legal, but a stupid idea. You are going to end up...

    Why do divers eat seafood?

Most fish have very little to fear from me with a speargun! However, I do take the odd one when the opportunity presents itself. I mainly dive for lobster and scallops. But yes, in general. most spearos are highly selective.

    Why do divers eat seafood?

As a recreational diver turned underwater hunter more or less, I think you make valid points. People either don't think it through or are hypocrites. Personally, I would never buy fish from a supermarket or restaurant as I don't think commercial fish harvest can ever be sustainable. That said...

    Dive Buddies Wanted: Cyprus

The Zenobia is a fantastic dive site. Some people spend most of an entire week diving the wreck. It's suitable for all levels from Open Water (just about) to technical diving.

where would you live if you couldnt dive anywhere else

Good thread. At this point in my life, I want easy, so Mediterranean for me, ideally a spot with good shore diving. We all know fish stocks have been decimated, but the generally benign conditions, warm water (in summer) and good visibility is attractive to me. What's better than rocking up to a...

    Betrayed and Bewildered

Believe it or not we now have Costco in NZ now (yes, we are 50 years behind). Wife bought some "natural vanilla extract". Same deal, it appears that very little of the product is actual vanilla extract. We are not health freaks, but the labelling is misleading. Of course, it's not limited to...

    Great white visitor

This fellow popped up a literal stone's throw from my front door (Whangarei Harbour, NZ). They are neither common nor uncommon, we do see them from time time, but not usually so far up the harbour. Not my photo, borrowed from Facebook. A claim of 5 metres. Not sure I believe that, but certainly...

My Wife is finally giving Scuba a try - what can I do to help her succeed?

Go easy. Don't push her in to diving any more than you already have done and don't impress your vast skills and knowledge. Let her work things out for herself at her own pace. Fanatics can be tiresome to others.

Equipment Commercial diving accident - Podcast

May be of interest: Amazing story! I've enjoyed the other episodes that I've listed to as well. Mostly not diving-related, but one or two have a diving or boating theme.

Myth or Fact? Sharks are attracted to WHITE dive gear

I had a DSMB almost attacked at The Brothers. It was one of the the highlights of a very sharky week. If the the shark had made contact with it, I would have stuck it in a frame afterwards! I think about things a bit differently now. Anyway, a DSMB rushing towards the surface certainly does seem...

    Egypt in August: bad idea?

I've been to Egypt several times during the summer months. It's dry heat, so more bearable than high humidity environments. No, I wouldn't go for a long walk in the middle of the day and yes, you want aircon in your room, but otherwise it's fine. That said, I like it hot, you may not!

Air travel drysuit bp/w fins luggage suggestion?

I've used a hard case for many years to transport dive gear including drysuits. Of course, this comes with a penalty, weight. Compromises have to be made. Take out the clothes, or at least most of them and toiletries. If you're going on a liveboard, you will need very little of either.

Where did you solo dive today?

I was about to say sounds good to me, then did the conversion to degrees C and yes, that is a little OTT! Not that it would be uncomfortable, but I'd choose to save the wear and tear on a drysuit at those temperatures. Under 25 degrees C (77 degrees F) and I like to be in a drysuit.
