    Great white visitor

This fellow popped up a literal stone's throw from my front door (Whangarei Harbour, NZ). They are neither common nor uncommon, we do see them from time time, but not usually so far up the harbour. Not my photo, borrowed from Facebook. A claim of 5 metres. Not sure I believe that, but certainly...

Equipment Commercial diving accident - Podcast

May be of interest: Amazing story! I've enjoyed the other episodes that I've listed to as well. Mostly not diving-related, but one or two have a diving or boating theme.

    First Halcyon purchase (reel)

After 25 years of diving, I bought my first bit of Halcyon gear, a Pathfinder reel. Bloody expensive, but bloody well made! It's a heavy lump!

    Fin spring strap tabs

Looking at previous posts, I'm not the only person who has had fin spring strap tabs break. I tried to do without, but it doesn't work for me and was looking for a simple, reliable fix. Shock cord to the rescue. 5mm cord is a bit stiffer than thinner cord and stands proud. With a tight knot, the...

    Another generic diving holiday video!

Red Sea North & Brothers itinerary, August 2023. Another generic diving holiday video! Just for my memories, but thought I'd share. Apologies to Arabic speakers about the music, while I know it's not inappropriate, it's not particularly relevant either. I just liked the song.

    Guided diving for advanced divers

Just back from a long trip to the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Did a mixture of shore, day boat and liveaboard diving. Shore diving was mainly solo and dived with both large and small groups on boats. A lot of it was wonderful, but I didn't particularly enjoy the group diving and especially with...

    Facebook

I have been a long time user of internet forums like ScubaBoard. I've watched most of them die over the years as people have migrated to Facebook. Luckily, this forum is alive and well. As for Facebook, I use it in a particular way. Not registered with a my real name, no "friends" (just like...

    Diving is a funny sport!

Diving as a sport seems overly hierarchical. Divers in general often seem ready to criticise others for their technique, or choice of equipment. Safety is always stated as the primary concern, but there's more to it, definitely some psychology involved. Maybe it's more prominent on the internet...

GoPro photo vs video screen shot

I've had a good start with my GoPro Hero 11. It's paired with some older video lights and I'm pleased with the results. That said, my attempts at still photography underwater have been less good. Video screen shots have been better, so I'm wondering if that's the way to go? Either way, I know...

    Bubblemaker

My 8 year old son did Bubblemaker today. It went well. He had a very patient instructor which helped. A positive experience and he is keen to get in to diving now. He removed his regulator underwater and replaced it without drama. Dive time was 1 hour and 15 minutes! He needs to work on his...

    Cyprus (Summer 2023)

I have returned to Cyprus (Mediterranean) after being away for 11 years. We got caught out by COVID and had to postpone our trip multiple times. In the meantime, we had a family bereavement on the island, so it's been an emotional visit. In addition, I haven't been diving anywhere near as much...

    Snappy video editing

I'm currently making a travel vlog with my family with watersports/diving included. Looking at various types of video on YouTube over the years, clips are being edited shorter and shorter. I've been a little dismissive of this style, thinking it caters towards our ever reducing attention spans...

Am I allowed to start a new "what computer" thread?

One of my beloved HelO2 computers has died, or at least had a major psychotic episode that isn't going to get better. I have been out of the computer market for 12 years, so have no idea what's going on (!), hence the question, what computer? I'm sure it's been done to death, so apologies...

Suunto HelO2 has lost the plot

One of my Suunto HelO2 computers has lost the plot. It currently thinks I'm at 52.7 metres and I promise you I'm not! Have taken the battery out and replaced it and it just repeats it's dive. It's been well used and it's done it's time. I'm guessing it's game over, any thoughts?

    GoPro Horizon Lock?

I bought a Hero 11 recently. It's the first GoPro I've owned with Horizon Lock. Is it just extreme electronic image stabilisation? Underwater applications? I would have thought it was useful for macro? Cheers.

GoPro Hero 11 Black codecs and older MacBook

Having just bought a new GoPro Hero 11 Black, I was pretty keen to try it out and got a sinking feeling when I realised it only recorded in HEVC with no option to record in H.264. I have an older MacBook Pro (late 2013) and it's not happy with HEVC at all! I've gone down the Handbrake file...

    Solo boating AND solo diving?

I've been boating for 8 years and solo diving for much longer. The thought of combining the two has never really appealed or occurred to me. Everyone has a level of risk they are willing to accept. I think this crosses the line for me. Too many things with the potential to go wrong which are out...

    Any Cyprus locals on ScubaBoard?

Any Cyprus locals on ScubaBoard? I'm heading over in July and have some specific questions that probably aren't relevant to most tourists/visiting divers. Cheers.
