What not to miss - Durban -> Punta Do Ouro - May 2021

Pleasure, & yes, I agree. Cape Town is proper cold!! (for me) Noted on the rest. As far as the roads are concerned, pretty much everything I've discussed is highway driving (good roads). The exception is the trip up to Sodwana and then further up to Ponto: Heading north from Durban, the...

What not to miss - Durban -> Punta Do Ouro - May 2021

Zeke. I'm a DM, dive 95% of the time in the Durban area and live in a small holiday town 30 minutes north of Durban. (Ballito). You're coming to the right spot! Especially in May when the vis is slightly better and fortunately for us, it's never really that cold in our water. Expect around 18...

Lowest profile single tank wings (with built in STA)?

I'm 184cm, 102kg. I dive a 5mm wetsuit. Mostly a 15l steel, sometimes a 12l steel. SS backplate. DIR harness. No weights. My Hollis S25 LX wing is absolutely perfect. My buoyancy is great with both the 12 and the 15. Love this wing!

    Vintage Tank find

What a fortuitous thread to stumble upon today. Luis, having found some of your other threads, it would seem you're a wealth of knowledge in this arena. The backstory: Late last year I was offered this twinset (steel, 7l, pretty ancient manifold that I'm very unlikely to ever dive). Anyway...

    Yet another BPW question

Hahaha. Fair point. Don't misunderstand me though - I'm acutely aware of the costs involved down the line, but that doesn't preclude me from being sensible about what I buy at all times. Furthermore, a conversation like this one always yields more valuable information than only the answer to...

    Yet another BPW question

Good point, thank you. Well, this is all part of my learning. Step 1: Move to BP/W with my regular single (15L) Step 2: Learn to dive doubles (I have two 12L matched already so I will just need a manifold, new wing & some training) Step 3: Tec Rec. Start with new gas mixes etc. Step 4: Stage &...

    Yet another BPW question

Thanks for the replies all, this has certainly been very helpful. SS it is then. (And a few replies below too). Steel - always negative, even at the end of a dive. Thanks. Sizing the wing is an interesting procedure in itself - especially without the ability to try a few options first...

    Yet another BPW question

Hi All. TL;DR: Ali or SS backplate? I've searched, I've read, I've Googled & I've Youtubed. I've learned a LOT, but I have just one more question... :) Firstly though, some background which will help: I dive warm(ish). Generally, around 18 to 20'C, but frequently 16'C - 23'C. (East coast...

    Weighting Paradox

This is something I will definitely try! I know I'm not horizontal all the time - I've got heavy feet :) I need to figure out a way to mount some weight on my shoulders.

    Weighting Paradox

Yeah, I think I'm just not venting the back of the BC properly - will have to work on that. Pic of my BC (found online) attached.

    Weighting Paradox

Thanks for all the helpful comments guys. Firstly, here's a little more info on my gear (for context) and I've replied to some of the comments inline below. Mares Pioneer 5mm wetsuit Tigulio T52 Hover BCD with 2kg in each pocket 15lt steel tank. During a dive (most of my diving is between 20m...

    Weighting Paradox

Hi all. Hopefully some of you can help out with a bit of a weighting paradox I have: I'm constantly on the lookout for tips and advice on being a better diver and I came across this article recently: How to Reduce Weight When You Dive • Scuba Diver Life All good and well, nothing really new...

    Aladin Air Z O2

Hi All. I have an Aladin Air Z O2 computer and transmitter which is getting a bit long in the tooth and will need a replacement soon. What I would like to know is which models of dive computer support my existing pressure transmitter? I would like to buy a new computer and continue to use my...

    Who And Where?

Thanks guys! Yep, I was certainly a bit surprised to find no Durbanites here, but then again - a we're pretty apathetic bunch at the best of times! I am told that Durban diving is often not great because a) vis can be crappy and b) there isn't much to see other than the few often visited...

    Who And Where?

Sorry to necro the thread. I'm Chris and I'm from Ballito. Did my OW cert last month at Sodwana and have since done another 4 dives in Oman last week. Going out with DUC next Saturday to see the containers in Durban. First weekend of September I'm booked to do AOW and Nitrox at Sodwana...

Oman: Who should I dive with?

Hi Everyone. Thank you all for your replies, very handy to get all these diverse opinions. I had 4 dives over this last weekend and have just emailed a colleague of mine about the dives - I'll past my email below as well as it may be of interest. We went to Bandar Khayran on Friday with Euro...

    refusing an instabuddy

Thank you for saying this! I'm that new guy, my only dives are my qualification dives so I really need to dive more (next weekend, yay!), but there's the catch 22 of being the new guy who needs to learn and gain experience and the nervousness of screwing somebody else's dive up because of my...

Buoyancy in 7 mil and how to be a good instabuddy -- kelp!

Wow. I'm a complete newbie having only just qualified, but the above surprised me! Let me illustrate (in metric!) I'm 6'1/2", 120kg's, probably 20kg's overweight and was diving with a 12l steel tank and 5mm wetsuit (full body), no hood or booties and jacket BC. I was carrying 7kg on the...

    refusing an instabuddy

Being that this is just a tourist dive while I'm out the country I'll be using all rental gear, same as everyone else. Here at home I have a 15l steel tank which is bigger than the normal 12l we see around here. Great tip on the depth though, thanks for that. I really need to work on my peak...
